Sabres Post 151 to Edge Past Holyport in Entertaining League Encounter

Sonning U13 Sabres secured victory at Knowl Hill on 19 August, defending a total of 151 for 5 against Holyport in their BYCL Under 13 Challenge (Tier 2) East fixture. After being asked to bat first following Holyport's decision to field at the toss, the Sabres produced a well-constructed innings built on contributions throughout the order before holding their nerve in the field to restrict the visitors to 142 for 4.

Saurav Sivaram set the tone at the top of the order with an assured 30 from 21 balls, striking three fours before retiring not out. He and opening partner Muhammad Shah put on 33 for the first wicket, giving the Sabres a solid platform. Shah fell for 8, caught by Asiye Griffin off the bowling of Thiago Cedrola, but the momentum had already been established.

Captain Ishan Jithendriya continued the positive approach, cracking four boundaries in a fluent 23 off 17 deliveries. He and Izaan Baloch added 37 for the second wicket before Jithendriya was stumped by Rohan Dephu off Griffin's bowling. Baloch anchored proceedings with a steady 19 from 30 balls before retiring not out, but it was Charlie Koslicki who truly ignited the middle overs. Koslicki blazed 26 from just 18 balls, clubbing three fours and a six in a partnership of 59 for the third wicket that propelled the Sabres towards a commanding total. Griffin eventually had Koslicki's stumps rearranged, finishing with impressive figures of 2 for 18 from his three overs. Late cameos from Elias Haidari (7 off 6) and Idris Malik (9 off 5) ensured the Sabres closed on an imposing 151 for 5.

Holyport's response was spirited. Captain Nathaniel Denholm and Oscar Ashwell constructed an excellent opening stand, putting on 67 before Will Playle fell for 9, bowled by Sivaram. Denholm looked in fine touch, accumulating 31 from 28 balls with three fours before retiring not out, while Ashwell contributed 27 from 29 deliveries before Nikhil Oruganti bowled him to claim an important wicket.

Rohan Dephu kept Holyport in the hunt with an aggressive 30 off 18 balls, peppered with five fours. However, the visitors lost Griffin for a duck, caught and bowled by Hitesh Kaushik Reddy Karem, and at 85 for 3 the required rate was climbing. Ollie Holland threatened to take the game away from the Sabres with a punchy 23 from 20 balls, including three fours and a six, sharing a dangerous 52-run stand for the fourth wicket with Daniel Talbot. Haidari broke through with the crucial wicket of Holland, bowling him to leave Holyport needing 15 from the closing stages.

The Sabres' bowling effort was a genuine team performance, with all ten outfield players sharing the overs. Jamie Dollinger was particularly economical, conceding just 6 runs from his two overs, while Izaan Baloch's tidy 2-0-8-0 spell helped maintain pressure. Sivaram and Oruganti each claimed a wicket alongside Haidari and Karem, ensuring the opposition never had the luxury of a settled partnership for long enough.

In the end, Holyport's lower order could not sustain the tempo, and Daniel Talbot managed just 1 from 10 balls as the required run rate spiralled beyond reach. The Sabres held firm to win by 9 runs, a result that reflected both their batting depth and the collective discipline of their bowling attack across a thoroughly competitive 40 overs of cricket.
