Spartans Undone by Shinfield's Ruthless Chase After Middle-Order Collapse
Sonning U15 Spartans suffered a disappointing defeat away at Manor Ground Sports facility on 6th July as Shinfield's Under 15 Warriors chased down a modest target of 89 with seven overs to spare in this BYCL Under 15 T20 Challenge fixture.
Captain Charlie Koslicki won the toss and opted to bat first, but his side found themselves in early trouble against a disciplined Shinfield attack. Opener Ishan Jithendriya fell for 6, bowled by Ojas Shah, before Pranoy Ramankandath was dismissed in similar fashion by Nishaant Parthiban for 9. When Nishal Jarugu was caught by Avnish Bharambe off the bowling of Aditya Patodi for a duck, the Spartans were wobbling at 23 for 3.
The situation deteriorated further as Marcus Hawkins was bowled by Patodi for 4, and Edward Duvall was caught — also off Patodi's bowling — without scoring, leaving Sonning reeling at 24 for 5. Patodi's figures of 3-11 from his three overs were the standout bowling performance of the innings, while Aniruddh Iyer also proved difficult to negotiate, claiming 3-10 from three overs including the key wicket of Koslicki.
It was the skipper who provided the innings' backbone. Koslicki came together with Yuvraj Singh Kaur at 24 for 5 and the pair constructed a vital partnership of 41 runs. Koslicki struck five fours in his 22 off 24 balls before being caught by Prithvi Vijayarao off Iyer. Singh Kaur battled through to the end, carrying his bat for an unbeaten 11, though his 37-ball stay reflected the difficulty of scoring in the latter stages. A generous 31 extras — including 20 wides — helped inflate the total to 88 for 9 from the full 20 overs.
In reply, Shinfield barely broke stride. Sonning's bowlers struggled with their lines early on, conceding 24 extras of their own. Pranoy Ramankandath offered the brightest moment with the ball, returning economical figures of 1-6 from three overs and claiming the wicket of Prithvi Vijayarao, who was caught by Charlie Koslicki for 4. Krishna Manikandan also struck, having opener Siddhant Channiganathota caught by Ishan Jithendriya for 19.
However, those two wickets were the only breakthroughs Sonning could manage. Shourya Patnaik dominated the chase with a fluent 31 off 25 balls, finding the boundary six times before retiring not out. He and Channiganathota had built a commanding second-wicket partnership of 69 runs that effectively decided the contest. Ojas Shah chipped in with an unbeaten 10 that included a six, ensuring Shinfield reached their target of 89 in just 13 overs for the loss of only two wickets.
It was a chastening evening for the Spartans, whose batting frailties — nine wickets lost in the first innings — left them without enough runs to defend. The bowling unit, with eight different bowlers used in just 13 overs, lacked the control needed to build sustained pressure on a confident Shinfield line-up.
