Match Report

Sonning 3rd bounced back from their first defeat of the season the last match with an excellent win at Thatcham.

On a sunny day, Sonning won the toss yet again and decided to bat first on a very dry looking pitch. Sonning got off to a decent start, with Naqash Tahir, hitting some very good shots and on other side Ali Driver started his inngs watchfully. Naqash provided the necessary early momentum and the speed of scoring was never really an issue throughout the innings. The opening partnership ended on 46 when Naqash was caught at square leg trying to hit one out of the ground. The wicket brought captain Waqas (19) and he kept the scoreboard ticking over with some aggressive stroke play.

Captain also departed after having started aggressively as he was adjudged LBW. The wicket brought Ahasan Hameed(30) to the crease .He started with some lovely stroke play hitting one six over square leg. Ahsan was adjudged LBW when the score was on 140. The wicket brought Vivek Vasist (24) and the instructions were clear to up the run rate. In came Nick Ray(4) and he could not disturb the scores as he played one around to an off spinner. Captain conveyed the messaged to the middle to up the rate as an early declaration was on the card. In came Vivek Vasist (24) and he hit few mighty blows and he was caught at point. Aamir Tahir came and went without scoring in order to up the run rate. Captain delayed the declaration as the run rate considerably went down in the last few overs and it looked like the declaring would be delayed much further. In came Ben Morris, playing his first match for 3rds, and he made a quick fire 27* hitting some powerful strokes and one huge six over square leg. His late hitting allowed Sonning to declare with 4 overs to spare and give enough over to the bowlers to take 10 wickets needed to win the match. Ali(77*) on other hand was going steadily and he reached his well-deserved 50 with a four to the point boundary. Sonning declared on 229/7 in 43 overs.

After the tea, Sonning started with Phil Wilding and Vivek Vasist to open the bowling. The opposition started aggressively and took the attack the opening bowlers. Thatcham crossed 50 inside 10 overs. Captain brought himself in order stop the run follow and soon Sonning took their first wicket when captain took wicket on his first ball. Naqash tahir replaced Phil and got into the action straight away. He got his first wicket quickly and opposition were 2 wickets down in quick time. Captain and Naqash both bowled excellent spells taking 5 wickets in no time and the oppositions were 5/80. Ali took two brilliant catches and Phi l took one well-judged catch as well.

Jonny Garham, playing his first match for Sonning, was brought on and he bowled fuller length and on other day could have rewarded with a wicket. Captain brought Aamir Tahir on in order close the innings and it didn’t took him long to make his mark on the game, taking the first wicket in the first over. The opposition were 6 down inside 26 overs. The home side put some resistant with some aggressive batting. Aamir bowled an excellent spell of fast bowling.Naqash was brought again and this time to bowl his offies on the dry wicket and he quickly finished the innings when couple of half tracker were hit straight to the fielders. He finishes with 5 wickets with some excellent seam and accurate bowling. Syed Adnan also got into action by taking a wicket with captain Waqas taking a good catch at slip.
