Rain Denies Sonning as Abandoned Clash Leaves Both Sides Sharing Points

Sonning 1st XI were left to rue the weather as their Division 2A fixture against Aldershot at King George's Field was abandoned on 30 August, with the hosts still requiring 222 runs from their chase of 250 when play was curtailed. Both sides collected seven points from a match that had promised much after an entertaining first innings.

Captain Peter Higginbottom won the toss and opted to insert Aldershot, but the decision was immediately put under pressure by opener Justin Pretorius, who launched a blistering assault on the Sonning attack. Pretorius cracked 44 from just 28 deliveries, striking three fours and two sixes, before Shenul Widanapathirana held a catch off the bowling of Higginbottom to dismiss him with the score on 86. By that stage, the damage had been done and Pretorius had established a crucial 76-run second-wicket partnership with Alex Farr, who was beginning to find his range.

Farr proved the cornerstone of the Aldershot innings, compiling a commanding 84 from 99 balls in an innings laced with eight fours and three sixes. His 106-run stand with Jack Bromley for the third wicket took the visitors into a position of considerable strength at 192 for 2, and it appeared as though Aldershot were set to post a total well in excess of 300.

Zanoxolo Gift Kwatsha then produced a match-changing spell to haul Sonning back into the contest. The seamer returned figures of 3-35 from his ten overs, including two maidens, and his double strike — removing Bromley for 15 and Corne Botes for a duck in quick succession, both lbw — reduced Aldershot to 195 for 5. Kwatsha later accounted for Ben Harris, caught by Widanapathirana for 14, to cap a disciplined and incisive display.

Mohammed Zahid chipped in with the wicket of Niall Burke, caught by Higginbottom, while Widanapathirana claimed the prized scalp of Farr, who was caught behind by Connor Wardlaw. Indeveer Sahota was involved in the run out of Marc Davies for 12 as Sonning's fielding efforts tightened considerably after a loose start. However, the extras column told its own story — 51 in total, including 35 wides — which inflated the Aldershot total significantly beyond what their batsmen alone had managed.

Aldershot ultimately closed on 249 for 7 from their 45 overs, with Kyle Kisko (11 not out) and Calum Grover (11 not out) seeing out the innings. It was a total that, while substantial, would have been within Sonning's reach had the weather cooperated.

In reply, Sonning made a positive start. Higginbottom struck two fours in his 10 before falling lbw to Greg Fanshawe with the score on 12. Muhammad Ayub looked in fine touch, racing to 11 not out from just ten balls with two boundaries, while Mohammed Zahid was unbeaten on 6 as Sonning reached 28 for 1 from seven overs. The required rate was manageable and wickets were in hand, but the rain had the final say as the match was abandoned, denying both sides the chance to press for a decisive result in an absorbing league encounter.
