Match Report
Spartans Fall Just Short in Agonising Two-Run Defeat at Crowthorne
Sonning U13 Spartans suffered a heartbreaking defeat at St Sebastian's Playing Field on 13th May, losing to Crowthorne & Crown Wood's U13 Kangaroos by just two runs in this BYCL Under 13 Development league encounter. Having posted 100 from their 20 overs after winning the toss, the Spartans were unable to defend their total as the hosts reached 98 for 9 — enough to claim victory under the pairs cricket format where wickets cost runs.
The Spartans' innings was built around an excellent knock from Fawaz Attiq, who top-scored with 24 off 21 balls, striking three fours in a fluent display of batting. Attiq provided the backbone of the innings when it was most needed, and his contribution proved the most significant with the bat on either side. Benjamin Peters chipped in with a steady 12 off 16 deliveries, while captain Namit Desai (10 off 12, including a four) and Charlie Koslicki (10 off 11, with a four) both made useful contributions in the middle order.
Extras played a significant role throughout the contest. The Spartans benefited from 34 extras in their innings, with 32 of those coming from wides as the Crowthorne bowlers struggled for consistency. Kai McEwan was the standout performer with the ball for the hosts, however, claiming a remarkable five wickets from his 2.5 overs for just 11 runs — a spell that proved decisive in keeping the Sonning total in check.
In reply, Crowthorne's chase was never straightforward. Ibrahim Ali Mir was the pick of the Spartans' bowling attack, delivering an impressive spell of 3 for 14 from his three overs. His ability to take wickets at regular intervals kept the pressure firmly on the home side and gave Sonning genuine hope of defending their total.
Fawaz Attiq continued his fine all-round display by picking up 2 for 16 from three overs, while captain Desai, Benjamin Peters and Shriyans Iyengar each claimed a wicket apiece. Iyengar deserves particular credit for his economical figures of 1 for 7 from two overs, including a maiden — the only maiden bowled by either side in the entire match.
William Walsh proved the most dangerous batsman for Crowthorne, scoring 13 off 16 balls with two fours, while Jacob Maunders added 12 off 16 deliveries lower in the order. Although no individual batsman dominated, the home side's contributions were spread across the card, with Amar Annavarapu (9), Jackson Bhatti (8) and captain Will Taylor (7) all making starts without converting them into substantial scores.
Despite taking nine wickets and restricting Crowthorne to just 69 runs off the bat, the Spartans were ultimately undone by 29 extras conceded in the second innings, including 26 wides. Charlie Koslicki's tidy spell of 5 runs from two overs offered the most disciplined bowling, but too many loose deliveries elsewhere allowed Crowthorne to accumulate runs without needing to take risks. It was a match that the Spartans will feel they let slip, having held the upper hand for long periods only to fall agonisingly short by the narrowest of margins.
