U15 Sharks Fall Short as Falkland Chase Down 129 with Ease at Knowl Hill

Sonning U15 Sharks suffered a defeat at home to Falkland Under 15 Cavaliers in the BYCL Under 15 T20 Challenge West fixture at Knowl Hill on 13 July, as the visitors chased down a target of 129 with 33 balls to spare and just four wickets down.

Having won the toss and elected to bat, Sonning found early progress difficult against a wayward but persistent Falkland attack. Opener Yusuf Malik fell for just 1 off 11 balls, caught by Joe Langdon off the bowling of Josh Lovell, with the score on 18. Wicketkeeper Ishan Jithendriya looked more assured at the crease, striking two fours in his 13 off 18 balls before being bowled by Langdon, and the Sharks slipped to 36 for 2. The middle order stuttered further as Yuvraj Singh Kaur contributed just 4 before being bowled by Rupert Allchurch, and Santhosh Murugaraj was caught by Teddy Edwards off Zachary Hill for 6, leaving Sonning at 54 for 4.

The most productive phase of the Sharks' innings came through a valuable fifth-wicket partnership of 38 between Charlie Koslicki and captain Idris Malik. Koslicki was the more aggressive of the pair, cracking three fours in a brisk 15 off 13 deliveries before being bowled by Ned Sturmey. Malik anchored the innings with a patient 13 off 33 balls, though his stay ended when Sturmey struck again. The Falkland bowler proved the most effective on show, claiming 3 for 12 from his three overs despite conceding five wides.

A late flurry from Nicholas Jones (7 off 5 balls) and Namit Desai, who remained unbeaten on 11 off just 6 balls with two fours, helped Sonning push their total to 128 for 8 from their 20 overs. A remarkable 54 extras — including 37 wides and 8 no-balls from the Falkland bowling attack — significantly inflated the total, accounting for more than 40 per cent of the runs scored.

Falkland's reply was emphatic. Captain Jimmy Pilbrow set the tone from the outset, racing to 33 off 27 balls with four boundaries before retiring not out. He and Teddy Edwards put on 32 for the first wicket, Edwards contributing a punchy 14 off 11 balls before being run out by Charlie Koslicki.

The game was effectively settled during a commanding second-wicket partnership of 88 between Jack Holloway and Sam Jones. Holloway struck five fours in his 28 off 21 balls, while Jones was equally fluent with 22 off 17 deliveries, the pair dismantling the Sonning attack with relative comfort. Nine Sharks bowlers were used, but none of the first eight could make a breakthrough as Falkland raced towards the target.

It was skipper Idris Malik who finally provided some resistance with the ball, taking 3 for 8 from 1.3 overs, including the wickets of Holloway (bowled), Jones (lbw) and Josh Cloke (bowled). His intervention came too late, however, as Falkland reached 129 for 4 in just 14.3 overs. The Sharks' own extras tally of 28 — featuring 14 wides and 10 no-balls — further eased the visitors' task on a chastening evening for the home side.
