Match Report

Muthukumaran's Explosive Knock Steers U15 Sharks to Victory Over Newbury

Sonning U15 Sharks posted 133 for 6 from their 20 overs before bowling Newbury out for 105 to claim a well-deserved win in the BYCL Under 15 T20 Challenge at Knowl Hill on 29 June. After being asked to bat first following Newbury's decision to field, the Sharks found themselves in deep trouble at 27 for 4 before a remarkable recovery through the middle and lower order turned the match on its head.

Captain Yusuf Malik and Eshan Wang-Kumar gave the innings a reasonable start, putting on 22 for the first wicket. Wang-Kumar struck a boundary in his brisk 7 from 9 balls before being bowled by Aviraj Singh, and from there the innings threatened to unravel completely. Malik fell lbw to Wilf Busby for 6, and Hemanth Barrigala ripped through the middle order, bowling both Marcus Hawkins and Yuvraj Singh Kaur for ducks in quick succession to reduce the Sharks to 27 for 4.

Idris Malik proved the anchor the innings desperately needed. Arriving at number five with the scoreboard in disarray, he batted through to the end of the innings for an unbeaten 19 from 43 balls, including two boundaries. His partnership of 32 with Namit Desai for the fifth wicket steadied the ship, and a further stand of 27 with Elias Haidari kept the momentum building. Haidari contributed a handy 11 from just 9 deliveries with two fours before being bowled by Luc Weaver.

The real fireworks came from Sibikumar Muthukumaran at number eight. His blistering 30 from only 18 balls, laced with six fours, transformed the complexion of the innings entirely. Muthukumaran retired not out having taken the attack to every Newbury bowler, and Charlie Koslicki continued the onslaught with an unbeaten 8 from 4 balls. A massive 48 extras — including 39 wides — from a wayward Newbury attack further boosted the total, with Aviraj Singh alone conceding 16 wides in his three overs.

Newbury's reply began solidly enough, with openers Aviraj Singh and Drew Barrett compiling 22 for the first wicket. However, Ismail Raza broke through when he had Barrett lbw for 2 from 19 balls, and Idris Malik followed up by having Barrigala caught by Desai for just 1, leaving Newbury 25 for 2. Luc Weaver counter-attacked brilliantly with 16 from 11 balls, clearing the boundary once and striking two fours, but his dismissal lbw to Koslicki for the third wicket at 54 was a pivotal moment.

Koslicki was the pick of the Sharks' attack despite his figures of 3 for 20 from two overs. He also accounted for Newbury captain Ryan Thomas, caught by Yusuf Malik for 6, and had earlier taken the key wicket of Singh caught-and-bowled for 9. Harry Clark-Lee offered resistance with 13 from 19 balls, and Elian Bessant hit a quickfire 10 from 8 deliveries in a sixth-wicket partnership worth 25, but both fell as the Sharks maintained their stranglehold.

Raza's figures of 3 for 6 from three overs were outstanding, as he removed Clark-Lee bowled and then had Tejas Choudary caught off his own bowling to leave Newbury reeling at 94 for 8. Idris Malik chipped in with 2 for 11 from his three overs, and Desai wrapped up the tail by bowling Busby for 1, completing the dismissal of Newbury for 105 in 19.1 overs and sealing a comprehensive 28-run victory for the Sharks.
