Match Report

Sabres Fall Short as Wargrave's Opening Onslaught Proves Decisive

Sonning U15 Sabres posted a competitive 128 for 6 from their 20 overs at Wargrave Cricket Club on 27 May, but a blistering opening partnership from the hosts rendered the total insufficient as Wargrave chased down the target with two overs to spare in this BYCL Under 15 T20 Challenge fixture.

Inserted after Wargrave captain Laurie Handcock won the toss and elected to field, the Sabres made a steady start through skipper Marcus Hawkins and Siddharth Kumar. The pair put on 30 for the first wicket before Hawkins was bowled by Aidan Kelly for 6. Kumar continued to bat positively, striking three fours in his 25 from 24 balls before Kelly claimed his second wicket, having him caught to leave Sonning 49 for 2.

Shubh Vedalankar injected momentum into the innings with an enterprising 23 off just 17 deliveries, lacing four boundaries before Harry Ward bowled him with the score on 65. Pranoy Ramankandath managed 7 from 19 balls in a slower passage of play, and when he fell caught off James Harrison, the Sabres were 94 for 4 with the innings in need of late impetus.

Yuvraj Singh Kaur provided the anchor the lower order required, carrying his bat for an unbeaten 28 from 35 balls, including four fours. He shared a useful 29-run stand with Ramankandath for the fourth wicket and remained at the crease as wickets tumbled around him. Rinchhen Lama contributed a brisk unbeaten 6 off 6 balls at the death, while 29 extras — including 22 wides — padded the total usefully. Rowan Searle was the pick of the Wargrave bowlers, conceding just 7 runs from his three overs while taking a wicket.

The reply began in devastating fashion. Openers Atharva Hadap and Harry Ward tore into the Sonning attack, racing to a partnership worth 97 runs before the first wicket fell. Hadap smashed 32 from 19 balls with five fours before retiring, while Ward matched him stroke for stroke with 32 from 25, finding the boundary six times. Their onslaught left Wargrave requiring just 32 from their final 11 overs with all wickets effectively intact.

The Sabres fought back admirably through the middle overs. Sibikumar Muthukumaran was the standout bowler, claiming 3 for 11 from his three overs, removing Kelly for 1, Handcock for a duck, and having Philip Pryke caught by Ismail Raza without scoring. His spell triggered a collapse from 97 for 0 to 102 for 4, briefly raising Sonning hopes. Benjamin Peters chipped in with the wicket of Isaac Miller, bowled for 5, while Siddharth Kumar accounted for Charles Monte, bowled for 4 off 24 balls.

However, the early damage had been too severe. Despite six wickets falling for just 35 runs, the target was always within reach. Ayaan Butt steadied the ship with an unbeaten 14 from 13 balls, striking three fours to guide Wargrave home to 132 for 6 in 18 overs. Ismail Raza deserved particular mention for his fielding contribution, effecting the run out of Searle in addition to taking the catch to dismiss Pryke. The Sabres' cause was not helped by 43 extras conceded in the second innings, including 28 wides and 10 no-balls, underscoring the discipline that eluded them at crucial moments.
