Match Report

Question – having earlier in the week correctly informed team members that Saturday’s fixture was at Waltham St Lawrence, why did JT lead our convoy of motors to White Waltham’s ground? Definitely a senior moment and had this occurred on tour would no doubt have attracted a serious fine!

Losing the toss for the first time this year Sonning were asked to bat first, Ted Baker ‘Ted’ taking first strike with Naqash Tahir ‘Naqs’ at the other end. Tempted by a full pitched delivery, Naqs played all over the top losing his leg stump in the process for a single. Having crunched a couple of meaty boundaries Ted soon departed caught behind for 13. Wickets then fell at regular intervals against accurate bowling with only John Talbot 21 and Snake 19 making a contribution from the top order. That a total of 127 was mustered, was down to some spirited batting by Sonning’s man of the match Nick Ashton ‘Nick’ (21 no), who with the tail put on 46 for the last 3 wickets.

Off some wayward bowling the Waltham St Lawrence openers, Gearing and Farnon were soon chasing down the target rattling up 40 in the first 7 overs…heads were beginning to drop in the field as little seemed to be going Sonning’s way. The introduction of off-spinner Nick changed the mood but it was Ryan Pownall ‘Ryan’ who made the initial breakthrough, with the first of two champagne moments! Farnon, attempting a cut, failed to get on top of the shot belting it straight to Steve Simmons ‘Simmo’ who salmon-like dived forward clutching the ball just above the turf…..Farnon does not know how unlucky he was as I reckon only two other fielders in the side would have physically been able to perform such acrobatics!

Ryan was soon replaced by Naqs who was to bowl an exceptionally tidily spell whilst Nick was now settling into his rhythm. With the first wicket falling at 47, Nick quickly grabbed two further wickets, Maddock for 7, very well caught by Antony Foley ‘Snake’ at cover and Harris LBW for a duck. Suddenly there was a whiff of an upset in the air and the mood of the game changed. Gearing was however still knocking the ball around with ease and a game of cat and mouse developed whereby Gearing was given singles so that Sonning could attack the new batsman. However it was Gearing (57) who was the next to go, off the second champagne moment, an excellent leg-side stumping by Ted off Naqs. With Naqs holding a return catch W St L still need 30 to win with 4 wickets left (they only had 10 fit batsmen). Nick managed one final scalp, Ted again completing a stumping from a well flighted delivery. Nick finished with 3 for 48 off 12 overs and Naqs 2 for 30 off 9 overs.
