Match Report

The 'stand-in' skipper having only managed to kick the Saturday crowd out at approx. 2.30 and having only time to consume 1 pint before the toss had decided to field first given the opportunity.

Proceeded out to the square, coin at the ready, tossed into the air - the bloody thing bounced in favour of the away skipper, who decided to bat first - I think that this was taken from words of the skipper 'it is playing really well'.

Opening downhill with the amazing pace of Dan Medhurst (who got no-balled twice for overstepping) and uphill with 'Man of Steel', George Troughton, wickets started tumbling.

In view of Dan's age, skip was concerned about breaking rules but allowed the young lad to bowl through his 8 overs, finishing with a creditable 2 for 38. From the other end 'The Trout' was moving the ball 'miles' and with breathtaking speed demolished the top and middle order

finishing with 5 for 11 off 8 overs, including 4 maidens - a good job Zillah arrived when it was our turn to bat.

The change of bowling brought about the dismissal of their opener The Trout taking a relatively simple catch off the bowling of Jack Medhurst, preferring uphill. This opener had been dropped twice when in the 40's and was out for 62, not too expensive (other than fines for the two

culprits). Both drops were off the bowling of Russell 'Elvis' Johnson, who avoided the field by bowling the No. 9.

A change was required and there was thought that the target would not be difficult to reach (how wrong can you be when you play for Sonning), so Banjo had the last wicket caught at point with the total at 92 from 29.4

of the allocated 40 overs. Banjo was most miffed to find out after the game that he had been wided twice, thinking that he had finished with figures of 0.4 - 0 - 0 - 1.

Deciding to open with experience the skip asked Shawny and Banjo to open, with Mike Baker at No.3, the skip was quite relaxed, with some much needed Fosters and the scorebook. Other than a stand of 31 between Mike Baker and Ryan Pownell, wickets tumbled regularly with the top 7

scoring 46 between them and with the help of a few extras managed to reach 56.

The lower order consisted of The Trout, Russell, Dan and The Thing (who else at No.11). Trout and Russell came together and batted solidly to steer the side home with a 3 wicket win. Trout top scoring with 20 not out ( and the only 6 of the match) and Russell finishing on 17 not out.

Skip was mightly relieved having had to pad up for the second day running and still not batting.

Man of the Match was unreservedly awarded to 'The Man of Steel'.
