Match Report

Sonning welcomed promotion chasing Chesham to an extremely damp Pound Lane, determined to keep their unbeaten record for the season. The appalling weather meant the wicket was very wet, but on winning the toss Chesham decided to bat in their search for the points they needed to overtake Purley in second place.

Several early rain delays meant the game was reduced in length, and while the ball was difficult to grip and the footing unsure for the bowlers, it was also very tough for batting. In his last game for the club, Aussie Cameron Gannon bowled very well, choosing accuracy above pace and ending up with 4 for 12 from 9 overs. Duncan Parr bowled his best spell of the season ending with amazing figures of 7-4-5-2. From the bottom end Abbas toiled away unchanged to pick up 3 wickets while also going for most of the runs in the innings. All the Chesham batsmen struggled to time the ball, and with a top score of 13, they were bowled out for a measly 71.

In an effort to avoid the forecast rain, Sonning went straight out to bat, expecting to knock off the runs easily. However it takes a good deal of grit and a certain type of batsman to succeed in conditions like these and unfortunately the Sonning top order did not show the necessary application. They were in real trouble at 21 for 4 and then 43 for 6 when Duncan Parr joined Vice Captain JJ Harris. Parr knocked the ball around sensibly, while Harris showed the necessary temperament to play himself in and choose the correct ball to despatch powerfully to the boundary. No more wickets fell, and Harris’ 33 not out was one of his finest innings for the club.

A final victory for the season meant Sonning finished 77 points ahead of second placed Purley and actually scored more points than any team in any Thames Valley League, some achievement. Let’s hope we can do the same next year in division 3a.

A big thank you must go to Cameron Gannon whose amazing season with bat, ball and in the field, has had a major impact on the success of the club. All the best Cam – we look forward to seeing you in the green and gold some time soon!
