Match Report

This was a strange game in many respects concluding with defeat on the very last ball of the game.

Sonning were rather weakened by the absence of Naqash and Aamir and although good cricketers had been found for the team, we were left a little light on bowling in particular and missed Naqash from the top of the batting order.

Nevertheless we won the toss and on a bright day and good pitch chose to bat. Ali opened with Richard Moore, both experienced openers and a left/right hand combination designed to frustrate their attack. Sadly it was not to be as Ali played on in the first over. Hameed came to wicket and looked solid then gave a simple caught and bowled. Bhuvan, playing his first game for a year played some lovely shots before deciding to charge a young seamer and was stumped. In the middle of all this, Richard who had looked totally in control glided a shot straight to gully and soon after Sagar was out caught at square leg. On a good pitch and against decent but average bowling we had managed to find ourselves ~ 50 – 5 and in deep trouble.

A recovery commenced led by Indy who batted beautifully throughout a controlled and chanceless innings. Nick joined Indy and began to put bat to ball, with five boundaries and a flat bat six over mid off. However Nick was bowled after drinks when a half tracker didn't bounce. In came Waqas batting down the order after a late arrival and he and Indy moved the score forward again before Waqas was given out lbw when well back in his crease.

Indy had watch all this calmly and no doubt was expecting to bat through with the tail. Sadly there was little resistance and the last three wickets fell cheaply. We had made 200 at a good rate but only used 36 overs, leaving 53 for them and Indy left stranded on 61 not out. A very fine display from him but he was not supported sufficiently well for one reason or another.

Nevertheless, 200 was a defendable total if we bowled well and we got stuck into them, dismissing both openers with 30 on the board. Indy and Waqas opened the bowling with tight spells and both were rewarded with wickets and more chances. Indy took a fine caught and bowled and Waqas clean bowled the other opener.

Wildthing then tied up one end with five overs for just seven runs while Hameed probed away outside off stump. The opposition seemed to be going nowhere at 70-5 but still had 30 overs in hand to reach our total if they could find some batting.

Sonning continued to look for wickets and Sagar was introduced to tempt them, but they continued to play very conservatively seemingly intent on survival. Sonning changed tactics again and reintroduced Waqas who bowled well clean bolwing one and picking up another wicket after a fine juggling catch by Bhuvan at mid off, taken over his shoulder running after the ball.

At this stage Kidmore started to make a push for our total and hit some strong blows, but this was halted with a run out by Hameed and we looked the only winners at 130~7 with 14 overs remaining. Kidmore had kept some strength at number 9 though and he began to hit some strong blows down the ground, including several straight sixes.

We battled hard but they finally tied the score with one ball remaining. Nick brought the field up but the last ball was crashed over extra cover and we had lost.

A game which had ebbed and flowed all day had been lost. Overall though, this defeat was down to us, we hadn't made enough runs after some ill judged shot selection and poor luck, and hadn't batted the majority of our 47 overs. However, the 200 gave us maximum batting points and we will be stronger next week.
