Match Report

Talby winds the clock back….but it is not enough

Not much went right for us on a warm day at Sulhampstead & Ufton CC. Loosing the toss the opposition chose to bat first, clearly a decision based on confidence in their ability which subsequently proved to be merited.

We welcomed Tom Talbot for his debut game for the club and the first Saturday outing of the season for John. Tom along with all the fielders stuck to their task as the opposition rattled up 248 for 4 declared in 40 overs. Don Wilmott and Pieter Olberholzer opened the bowling occasionally passing the bat but on an excellent batting wicket anything off line or short was dismissed to the boundary – something all the bowlers experienced save an excellent spell from John who stemmed the run rate in his early overs and taking two quick wickets, both caught behind the wicket by Ali Driver. Their top four batsmen all passed 50, the only “cheap wicket being taken at the death with Don taking an excellent catch on the boundary off the persevering Banjo. Earlier both Liam Smith and Dan Medhurst had bowled with great heart and determination, Liam beating the bat on a number of occasions and Dan bowling a consistent in line and length.

Our reply got off to a poor start, Jamie Travers bowled for 3. Ali with Pieter added 25 for the second wicket but when Pieter was out, Banjo quickly followed. Ali, joined by John, briefly gave us hope quickly rattling the total past 100. However, John ran himself out for 29 and Ali, caught behind followed in the next over for a patient and gluey 33. The innings then fell away quickly and it was left to Don and Wildthing to bring some respectability with a last wicket stand of 33 and in the process gaining us two further batting bonus points. However it was not without mishap as Thing took a nasty blow at “midships from their opening bowler which evidently resulted in a changing array of colours over the following few days of his nether region!
