Scorchers Cruise to Victory as Bowlers and Openers Dominate East & West Hendred

Sonning U15 Scorchers produced a commanding all-round display at Knowl Hill on 28 July, chasing down 112 with eight wickets in hand after restricting East & West Hendred to 111-8 in their U15 Hundred Pool 4 fixture.

Captain Neil Jasti won the toss and elected to field, a decision vindicated by a disciplined bowling performance that kept the visitors in check throughout. Siddharth Kumar was exceptional with the ball, conceding just 3 runs from his 10 balls while claiming the important wicket of Patrick Roberts, caught off his own bowling. His figures of 1-3 from 10 balls, with eight dot balls, set the tone for a miserly Sonning attack.

Neel Kumar was the standout wicket-taker, finishing with 4-22 from his 20-ball allocation. He removed Charlie Barton (4), captain Balin Atkins for a golden duck, Edward Hubbard (2), and Oliver Hubbard (6), ripping through the middle and lower order. His three-wicket burst around the 38-run mark, when he dismissed both Barton and Atkins in quick succession, left East & West Hendred reeling at 38-3 and in desperate need of a rebuilding effort.

George Hopgood provided the visitors' most significant contribution, striking 17 from 17 balls with three fours and sharing a useful 21-run partnership with Frederick Anstey for the seventh wicket. Max Stewart had earlier made a brisk 10 from 9 balls before retiring not out, while Roberts ground out 9 from 21 deliveries. However, 51 extras — including 24 wides and 15 byes — inflated the total considerably, accounting for nearly half the runs scored. Elias Haidari (1-11 from 10 balls), Edward Jones (1-8 from 10 balls), and Neil Jasti (1-15 from 10 balls) each chipped in with a wicket, while George Rothermel's economical 15-ball spell yielded just 8 runs.

The chase was emphatic. Jasti and Rothermel put on a blistering opening partnership of 53, taking the game away from East & West Hendred before the opposition could settle. Rothermel was the more aggressive of the two, smashing 36 from just 16 balls with seven fours and a six in an innings of real authority. He fell bowled to Patrick Roberts, but the damage was already done.

Jasti continued to anchor the innings after his partner's departure, adding a further 28 runs with Marcus Hawkins for the second wicket. The captain's 35 from 25 balls, laced with six fours, was a measured knock that combined attacking intent with sound judgement. When he was caught by Frederick Anstey off Roberts for 35, Sonning were well placed at 81-2 with the target firmly in sight.

Edward Jones ensured there were no late wobbles, striking an unbeaten 21 from 16 balls including three fours and a six. Alongside Hawkins, who contributed a patient 11 not out from 22 deliveries, Jones guided the Scorchers home with 21 balls to spare. Patrick Roberts' figures of 2-25 from 20 balls were the bright spot for East & West Hendred's bowlers, while Balin Atkins was economical with 1-9 from 15 balls, but the visiting attack ultimately had no answer to the quality of the Sonning batting lineup.
