Sabres Fall Agonisingly Short as Malik's Heroics Go Unrewarded at Crowthorne
Sonning U13 Sabres came within three runs of pulling off a remarkable comeback but ultimately fell short as Crowthorne & Crown Wood claimed victory in this BYCL Under 13 Challenge (Tier 2) encounter on 23 July 2025. Chasing 138 to win, the Sabres were bowled out for 134 off their 20 overs, losing seven wickets in a match that swung dramatically between the two sides.
Captain Ishan Jithendriya won the toss and opted to field first, but Crowthorne's top order made the Sabres pay on a good batting surface. Opener Tav Nair set the tone with a fluent 32 from just 24 balls, striking four boundaries before retiring not out. His opening stand of 34 with Jack Parlett gave the home side an excellent platform.
After Parlett fell for 7, caught off the bowling of Idris Malik, and Osian Bedford was cleaned up for a duck by Izaan Baloch, Crowthorne might have wobbled. Instead, Zach Breach (31 from 34 balls, five fours) and Beau Elrick (31 from 32 balls) seized control with composed innings that took the game away from the Sabres' bowlers. Both retired not out, helping their side post a challenging 137 for 2 from their 20 overs.
The Sabres' bowling attack shared the workload across all eleven players. Sibikumar Muthukumaran was the most economical, conceding just 9 from his two overs, while Malik (2-0-9-1) and Baloch (2-0-10-1) claimed the only wickets. However, 33 extras — including 15 wides and 8 no-balls — gifted Crowthorne runs that would prove decisive.
The Sonning reply got off to a steady start, with Jithendriya and Sibikumar Muthukumaran putting on 13 for the first wicket before Muthukumaran was caught by Druv Honyal off Harry Basmas for 4. Joseph Parker then counter-attacked with 9 from 10 balls, including two fours, adding 22 with his captain for the second wicket. But the innings was ripped apart when Honyal produced a devastating spell of 3 for 7 from his two overs, removing Parker (caught), Charlie Koslicki (bowled for a golden duck) and Elias Haidari (caught and bowled) in quick succession. At 35 for 4, and then 39 for 5 when Jithendriya fell to Lily Parlett, the Sabres appeared dead and buried.
Enter Idris Malik. The number six batsman played the innings of the match, compiling a superb 32 from 48 balls with three fours and a six. Crucially, he found a willing partner in Aarib Ansari, and together they mounted an extraordinary rescue mission. Their sixth-wicket partnership of 65 runs transformed the contest, taking the score from 39 for 5 to 104 for 6, suddenly bringing the target within reach. The Crowthorne bowlers lost their discipline during this stand, with extras flowing freely — the Sabres' innings total of 64 extras, including 43 wides, demonstrated the mounting pressure on the home side's attack.
Ansari's patient 13 from 36 balls ended when he was bowled by Jack Parlett, and the lower order could not quite finish the job. Divik Gupta was run out without scoring, and although Izaan Baloch struck a brisk 6 not out from four balls, the Sabres ran out of batting resources. The final margin of just three runs was cruel on Malik, whose mature innings so nearly dragged his side to an improbable victory. It was a match rich in lessons: the cost of conceding extras, the value of partnerships under pressure, and the devastating impact a single spell — Honyal's in particular — can have on a game.
