Sabres Fall Short as Pinkneys Green Chase Down 132 with Ease
Sonning U13 Sabres suffered a disappointing defeat at Waingels College on Tuesday evening as Pinkneys Green chased down their target of 132 with more than three overs to spare and just two wickets down in this BYCL Under 13 Challenge (Tier 2) East fixture.
After Pinkneys Green won the toss and inserted the Sabres, captain Finley Andrews and Oliver Barker provided a solid foundation with an opening stand of 41. Andrews struck one six in his 7 from 21 balls before being bowled by Noah Yahya, while Barker contributed 11 off 22 deliveries, finding the boundary twice before falling bowled to William Biggs with the score on 62.
Daniel Moseley injected real urgency into the Sabres innings with an excellent 20 off just 17 balls, cracking four boundaries in an innings that briefly threatened to take the game away from the visitors. However, his dismissal — caught off Eddie Voysey's bowling at 70 for 5 — triggered a middle-order collapse that saw Sonning lose five wickets for just 21 runs. Idris Malik was run out without facing a ball, Charlie Koslicki was bowled first ball by Kobe Khan, and Finn Reid fell caught off the same bowler for just 1. Elias Haidari hit a defiant six in his brief knock of 7 from 4 balls before Khan claimed his third victim.
Kobe Khan's figures of 3 for 12 from his three overs were the standout bowling performance of the match, dismantling the Sabres middle order in devastating fashion. At 83 for 7, the home side were in serious trouble, but Stanley Cox (11 not out off 23 balls) and Elijah Patel (9 not out off 28 balls) steadied the ship with an unbroken eighth-wicket partnership that guided the total to 131 for 7. The extras column told its own story, with 65 extras — including 35 wides and 24 no-balls — significantly inflating the Sabres total.
The Pinkneys Green reply got off to a flying start as captain Jacob Woest smashed 24 off just 11 balls, including four fours and a six, putting the visitors firmly in control from the outset. He and Liam Delaney put on 41 for the first wicket before Idris Malik bowled Woest to give the Sabres a glimmer of hope.
That hope was short-lived. Finn Reid struck quickly to bowl Sam Ruddle for a duck, but Delaney and William Biggs then took the game away from Sonning with authoritative batting displays. Delaney struck seven fours in his fluent 30 off 24 balls before retiring, while Biggs matched him run for run with 30 off 26 deliveries, finding the boundary five times. Both batsmen retired not out, having done the bulk of the damage.
Suvir Jaryal (2-0-7-0) and Charlie Koslicki (2-0-8-0) bowled tidy spells to apply some pressure, and Finley Andrews conceded just a single run from his over, but these were isolated bright spots in an otherwise challenging evening in the field. Noah Yahya's unbeaten 10 off 7 balls saw Pinkneys Green home at 132 for 2 in 16.5 overs, completing a comprehensive victory that underlined the gap the Sabres will need to bridge as the league campaign progresses.
