U15 Sharks Fall Short as Hungerford Chase Down 111 Without Loss

Sonning U15 Sharks suffered a chastening defeat at Knowl Hill on Tuesday evening as Hungerford's openers made light work of a 111-run target, racing to victory without losing a wicket in just 12 overs of their BYCL Under 15 T20 Challenge West fixture.

Having been inserted after Hungerford captain William Stallabrass won the toss, the Sharks endured a torrid start to their innings. Captain Ishan Jithendriya was run out for just 1 from four balls with the score on 6, and matters deteriorated rapidly as Ashley Whatley struck twice in quick succession. Sanvik Myadam was bowled for 1 and Nicholas Jones departed for a golden duck in the very next delivery, leaving Sonning reeling at 11 for 3 and in desperate need of a recovery.

That recovery came in the form of Charlie Koslicki, who counter-attacked with intent. Joining Muhammad Shah at the crease with the innings in crisis, Koslicki played the most significant knock of the Sharks' batting effort, striking 28 from 22 balls with two fours and two sixes. His partnership with Shah was worth 52 runs for the fourth wicket — comfortably the most productive stand of the innings — and dragged Sonning back into contention.

Shah played the anchor role throughout, occupying the crease for 43 deliveries and compiling a patient 20 that included three boundaries. His willingness to bat time allowed Koslicki and later Shreyas Koppole to play more freely around him. Koppole added a brisk 8 from 10 balls with two fours before falling caught by Toby Pearce off Ethan Proudfoot, and Shah himself was eventually run out with the score on 84 for 6.

The lower order of Marcus Hawkins and Yuvraj Singh Kaur saw out the remaining overs, contributing an unbroken stand of 26, though progress was painfully slow as the pair managed just 8 runs between them from 38 balls. A significant extras tally of 44 — including 28 wides and 12 no-balls from an erratic Hungerford bowling attack — ultimately inflated the Sharks' total to 110 for 6, a score that felt well below par on a true surface.

Any hopes of the Sharks defending their total were swiftly extinguished. Alex Bowden and Stallabrass tore into the bowling from the outset, with the Hungerford captain blazing 30 from just 20 balls, including four fours and a towering six. Bowden was equally commanding, accumulating 32 from 28 deliveries with four boundaries of his own. Seven Sonning bowlers were tried, but none could make a breakthrough as the opening pair put on the bulk of the runs before retiring. Yashwardhan Thakare (17 not out from 16 balls) and Dylan Prosser (4 not out) completed the formalities, Hungerford reaching 111 for 0 with eight overs to spare.

The Sharks' bowling figures made for uncomfortable reading, with extras again a concern — 28 in total, including 13 wides and 8 no-balls. Ismail Raza conceded 22 from his two overs, while Muhammad Shah's solitary over went for 15. Marcus Hawkins returned the most economical figures of the attack with 1-0-7-0, but it was a difficult evening in the field for every member of the Sonning side. Despite the 52-run fourth-wicket partnership between Koslicki and Shah providing a moment of quality, the Sharks were ultimately outclassed by a clinical Hungerford outfit.
