Match Report

Qaisar's Century Shines Before Rain Halts Sonning's Sunday Fixture

Muhammad Qaisar struck a magnificent century as Sonning Sunday 1s posted an imposing 268-4 before their friendly fixture against The Luddites was abandoned due to rain at King George's Field.

After winning the toss and electing to bat, Sonning captain Charles Astwood set a strong foundation alongside Qaisar with an opening stand of 100. Astwood played with fluency, striking 13 boundaries in his 58 from 64 deliveries before falling to Steve Musgrave.

Qaisar continued to dominate the Luddites bowling attack, reaching his century from 89 balls with 18 fours before retiring not out. His measured innings provided the backbone of Sonning's imposing total on a day when most Luddites bowlers struggled to contain the scoring.

Following William Travers' dismissal for 5, Richard Skeil (27) combined effectively with Toby Fitton in an 88-run partnership for the third wicket. David Maunder eventually broke through to dismiss Skeil, while J McGrady claimed Fitton's wicket shortly after for 8.

The innings was given late impetus by Jacob Fitton, who unleashed a blistering 53 not out from just 23 deliveries, including 8 fours and 2 sixes. His explosive batting, alongside James Travers (8 not out), pushed Sonning to their final declared total of 268-4 from 44 overs.

The Luddites' bowling figures reflected a challenging day in the field, with J McGrady (1-57 from 13 overs) and J Woodward (0-40 from 8 overs) delivering the most economical spells. Captain Sunny Dehal sent down 12 overs for his 0-64, while David Maunder (1-62) and Steve Musgrave (1-20) claimed the other wickets.

The Luddites' reply had barely begun when rain intervened. Michael Longridge delivered a maiden over to start the innings, with Dehal facing all six deliveries without scoring. Giles Pemberton was yet to face a ball when the weather closed in, leaving the match to be abandoned with The Luddites on 0-0 after just one over.
