Sabres Fall 20 Runs Short as Extras-Laden Contest Goes Twyford's Way

Sonning U13 Sabres suffered a 20-run defeat to Twyford in the BYCL Under 13 Challenge (Tier 2) East at Waingels College on Tuesday evening, unable to chase down a target of 163 despite a spirited batting effort in the second half of the contest.

Having won the toss and elected to field, captain Finn Reid's decision was initially rewarded as the Sabres' bowling attack made early inroads into the Twyford top order. Santhosh Murugaraj struck first, bowling Liam Robinson for just 1, before Elias Haidari clean bowled Jack Deane for a golden duck to leave the visitors wobbling at 9 for 2. Vinudi Jayawardana Weerasinghe then accounted for opener Vivaan R, who was caught by Murugaraj for 8, and Twyford found themselves in trouble at 24 for 3.

From that precarious position, however, the visitors rebuilt emphatically. Tom Lyons played the innings of the match, striking a fluent 30 from 27 balls with six boundaries before retiring not out. Thomas Adam provided an excellent foil at the other end, grafting 17 from 30 deliveries, while Fred I'Anson (13 not out) and Jacob Scholes (9 not out) ensured a strong finish. The Sabres' cause was significantly undermined by a total of 84 extras — including 47 wides and 20 no-balls — which accounted for more than half of Twyford's 162 for 3.

The challenge of the chase was stiff, and an early blow came when Archie Jansen was caught by Jack Deane off Fred I'Anson's bowling for 6, with the score on just 14. Nicholas Jones steadied things, forming a crucial 35-run second-wicket partnership with Oscar Williams that gave the Sabres a platform. Jones batted with composure for his 18 from 29 balls before falling caught off Deane.

The middle overs belonged to Santhosh Murugaraj, who produced a barnstorming knock of 31 from 27 balls, including two sixes and two fours. His aggressive approach, combined with solid contributions around him, kept the Sabres in the hunt. A productive 60-run fourth-wicket partnership between Charlie Koslicki and Idris Malik further revived hopes, with Koslicki striking a brisk 13 from 14 deliveries featuring two boundaries.

However, three run-outs in the latter stages proved fatal to the Sabres' pursuit. Reid was run out without scoring, Koslicki fell to a sharp piece of fielding from William Butterfield with the score on 140, and Malik suffered the same fate moments later for 3. Those dismissals — all through direct hits rather than bowling — halted momentum at precisely the wrong time, and the Sabres closed on 142 for 5, twenty runs adrift of the target.

While the defeat will disappoint the Sabres, there were positives to take from the batting effort. Murugaraj's all-round contribution — a wicket with the ball and the top score with the bat — was the standout individual performance, and Oscar Williams' patient 12 from 30 balls showed maturity beyond his years. The primary lesson, though, will centre on bowling discipline: 84 extras conceded in the first innings effectively handed Twyford a match-winning advantage before a ball had been struck off the bat in anger.
