Match Report
Spartans Fall Short as Emmbrook & Bearwood Chase Down 145 with Overs to Spare
Sonning U15 Spartans posted a competitive 144 for 4 from their 20 overs at Knowl Hill CC but were unable to defend the total as Emmbrook & Bearwood cruised to victory in the BYCL Under 15 T20 Challenge, reaching 145 for 2 with 19 balls remaining.
After Emmbrook & Bearwood won the toss and inserted Sonning, captain Yusuf Malik opened the batting alongside Yuvraj Singh Kaur. The pair put on 28 for the first wicket before Malik was bowled by Aryaman Dhall for 6 off 23 balls. Pranoy Ramankandath came and went quickly, caught by Sriram Srimushnam off Naman Sharma for just 2, leaving Sonning 37 for 2 and in need of momentum.
Charlie Koslicki provided exactly that. The wicketkeeper-batter struck a superb 32 from only 17 deliveries, hammering five fours and a six in an aggressive innings that shifted the tempo decisively. He and Yuvraj Singh Kaur rebuilt effectively before both retired not out, with Yuvraj contributing a valuable 22 off 30 balls, including two fours and a six of his own.
Nishal Jarugu maintained the impetus through the latter overs, scoring a fluent 30 from 30 balls laced with six boundaries. A 37-ball partnership between Jarugu and Mikhail Jafri added a further 37 runs for the fourth wicket before Jafri was caught by Aneesh Malavathu off Rohan Modha for 5. Sonning were also boosted by a generous 44 extras from the Emmbrook bowling attack, which conceded 40 wides across the innings.
The total of 144 looked defendable, but the Spartans' bowling lacked the discipline shown by their batters. Ibrahim Mir set the tone for Emmbrook's reply with a commanding 30 off 24 balls at the top of the order, striking five fours and a six before retiring. He and Malavathu put on a crucial opening stand of 65, laying the platform for a comfortable chase.
Yuvraj Singh Kaur produced the standout bowling performance for Sonning, claiming the wicket of Malavathu, bowled for 15, in a tidy spell of 2-0-15-1. Krishna Manikandan picked up the other scalp, having Dhall caught behind by Koslicki for 3. Beyond those two, the Spartans struggled to create pressure, with Sonning's bowlers conceding 40 extras of their own — 32 of them wides — effectively gifting Emmbrook nearly seven overs' worth of runs.
Sriram Srimushnam (23 off 22 balls) and captain Ganesh Mahendrakar (23 off 26) both batted with authority through the middle overs before retiring, while Darsh Parvatikar struck a quick-fire 10 not out from six balls to see Emmbrook home in the 17th over. Benjamin Peters was the most economical of Sonning's ten bowlers used, conceding 15 from his three overs, but without a wicket to show for his efforts.
It was a match in which both sides scored freely, but Emmbrook & Bearwood's superior batting depth and Sonning's wayward extras ultimately proved the difference. The Spartans will take heart from the performances of Koslicki, Jarugu, and Yuvraj Singh Kaur, but will recognise that tighter bowling discipline is essential if they are to convert competitive totals into victories in this competition.
