Match Report

After couple of weeks of disappointment due to the cancelations by the oppositions, Sonning 3rd finally got a chance to play their first game in TVL. A hot and sunny day at Sonning saw the Sonning 3rd held to a winning draw. Sonning elected to bat first after having won the toss. The wicket looked to have little bit grass on it, but in actual fact played well throughout the game, allowing the batsmen to play their shots with confidence but offering the bowlers very little and by the end of the game it had become a flat track.

Ali Driver and Liam Mayers opened the innings and started very watchfully and cautiously. After 10 overs the score was in 20s but most importantly without the loss of any wicket. When it look liked platform is set for both openers to improve the run rate Liam(19) played one in the air and was caught at square leg. The wicket brought Naqash Tahir to the crease. Naqash started aggressively in order to improve the run rate and soon Sonning crossed the 50 run mark. On the other end, Ali ,who started slowly ,was starting to get the best of the bowling. The run rate was still below par and the score was in 80s after 25 overs.

With half of the overs gone Sonning needed some late charge. Sonning lost Naqash(18) when he was caught in the slips of the keeper’s gloves. This brought captain Waqas Tahir to the crease. Waqas soon departed trying to hit one out of the park. Khalil(2) came and went without troubling the scorer too much. With Ali on the other side finding boundaries at regular intervals it only needed sensible batting from the other end and he was ably supported by Nick Ray(16).

Nick was dismissed playing all around the full ball. In came Jack Mott (31*) and he started to find boundaries at ease. Hitting couple of big sixes and hitting the ball to all corners. Ali was getting tired at the other end after playing a wonderful and carefully crafted knock of 94. Captain decided to declared at the end of 45th with the score 238/5 to give his bowlers enough time to get the opposition out.

After the usual splendid Sonning tea, Naqash Tahir and Aamir Tahir opened the bowling and it was soon clear that the away team is only playing for a draw. Naqash took one wicket in his very first over with one beautifully flighted delivery and was caught by Phill Wilding at long off. He was unlucky not to get couple more. The away team kept loosing wickets at regular intervals with Aamir Tahir bowling an excellent spell of 12-5-20-1 without much luck. Amer Khan came and was rusty in his first spell of the season but he took a crucial wicket of their captain and Sooning soon had the opposition 3 down in no time.

Phill Wilding bowled an excellent spell without any reward and by that time it was evident that opposition were never going to chase the target. Captain brought on the changes with the spells from himself,Jack, Liam and Syed Mazhar but could not break the 5th wicket partnership. Naqash and Jack both took late wickets but it was too late as the opposition had done enough to earn a well-deserved draw and batted out 47 overs against a very good bowling side.

Overall it was good performance, With Ali scoring a brilliant 94 and Jack scoring a brisk 31. This was one of the best fielding performances from us and a very good start to the season.
