Sabres Hold Their Nerve to Defend 138 at Wargrave

Sonning U13 Sabres claimed a hard-fought victory over Wargrave at Wargrave Cricket Club on Monday evening, defending a total of 138 for 8 in this BYCL Under 13 Challenge (Tier 2) East fixture. Captain Elias Haidari won the toss and elected to bat, a decision vindicated by a ten-run margin of victory as Wargrave were restricted to 128 for 5 in reply.

The Sabres' innings was a tale of two halves. Openers Edward Duvall (13 off 16, two fours) and Izaan Baloch gave the visitors a solid platform, putting on 26 for the first wicket. The middle order then suffered a dramatic collapse, with Muhammad Shah run out for a duck, Idris Malik caught for nought off Charlie Barnes, and the score stuck on 26 for 3. Baloch, watching the carnage from the other end, held firm and continued to accumulate.

It was Charlie Koslicki who reignited the innings, joining Baloch for a crucial fourth-wicket partnership of 35. Koslicki struck five fours in a breezy 21 off 16 balls before being bowled by Leo Helsby, while Baloch batted superbly for an unbeaten 25 off 23 deliveries, striking four boundaries before retiring. Their stand dragged the Sabres from a precarious position to one of relative comfort.

A further wobble saw Haidari caught for 2 and Nikhil Oruganti bowled for a duck by Dominic Jackson, leaving Sonning 80 for 6. Fawaz Attiq then produced a vital lower-order contribution, smashing three fours in his 18 off 17 balls. His partnership of 38 with Aarib Ansari for the seventh wicket proved the most productive of the innings and propelled the total beyond 130. Ansari contributed a patient 10 off 25 balls before being stumped off James Harrison. Wargrave's extras column — 45 in total, including 29 wides — significantly boosted the Sabres' final tally.

Wargrave's reply began steadily but without urgency, with Dominic Jackson (5 off 16) and Samuel Forsaith (8 off 17) struggling to find the boundary. Both fell to sharp run-outs — Koslicki accounting for Jackson and Duvall effecting the second — to leave the hosts 32 for 2. Haidari was particularly impressive with the new ball, conceding just 7 runs from his three overs, while Idris Malik was equally economical with figures of 3-0-8-0.

The third-wicket stand of 43 between Taylor Cook and Rory Harris threatened to seize the initiative for Wargrave. Harris was the most fluent batter on show, cracking three fours in his 27 off 18 before retiring. Cook contributed a useful 20 off 22 before being bowled by Ansari, and William Haynes added a quickfire 13 off 10 balls before being caught by Haidari off Attiq's bowling.

Despite these contributions, Wargrave could never quite keep up with the required rate. Izaan Baloch delivered with the ball as well, clean bowling Harrison for nought to claim 1 for 11 from his two overs. Leo Helsby (11 not out) and Charlie Barnes (2 not out) batted out the remaining overs, but the asking rate had climbed beyond reach. The Sabres' bowling attack, while generous with extras of their own — 25 wides among 42 total extras — spread the wickets across three different bowlers and crucially kept the boundaries to a minimum when it mattered most.

The ten-run victory was a testament to the Sabres' resilience after a shaky start with the bat, with Baloch's composed innings and the late partnerships of Koslicki and Attiq ultimately proving the difference between the two sides.
