U15 Sharks Fall Short as Sulhamstead & Ufton Prove Too Strong at The Watson Oval

Sonning U15 Sharks suffered defeat on the road as Sulhamstead & Ufton posted 145 for 2 from their 20 overs before restricting the Sharks to 114 for 5 in reply at The Watson Oval on 5th May.

Sulhamstead & Ufton captain Jacob Gearing wasted no time after winning the toss and electing to bat, striking six fours in a blistering 30 from just 21 balls at the top of the order before retiring not out. Thomas Grace offered little support at the other end, falling for 2 when he was caught by Idris Malik off the bowling of Elias Haidari, the first innings' most economical Sonning bowler with figures of 1 for 14 from three overs.

Elliott Langlands then joined Vaishvik Karthikeyan for a partnership that proved the backbone of the Sulhamstead innings. The pair put on a commanding 100-run stand for the second wicket, with Langlands contributing 21 from 32 balls and Karthikeyan matching Gearing's haul with 30 runs, including three fours and a six from 31 deliveries. The partnership was finally broken when captain Marcus Hawkins, keeping wicket and bowling, had Langlands caught by Yusuf Malik — Hawkins finishing with impressive figures of 1 for 2 from his single over.

Discipline with the ball proved a significant challenge for the Sharks. A total of 57 extras — including 46 wides — inflated the Sulhamstead total considerably. Pranoy Ramankandath conceded 28 runs from three overs with 12 wides and a no-ball, while Eshan Wang-Kumar's two overs cost 17 runs with 12 wides. Charlie Koslicki and Arya Maheshwaran provided the most controlled spells, conceding 8 from two overs and 13 from three overs respectively.

The Sharks' reply got off to the worst possible start when Yusuf Malik was bowled by Charlie Grant for 2 with the score on just 2. Hawkins followed for 4, bowled by Bertie Greenfield, leaving Sonning at 18 for 2 and already under pressure in the chase.

Idris Malik provided the anchor the innings desperately needed, compiling 14 from 32 balls. His partnership of 37 with Nishal Jarugu for the third wicket steadied the ship and brought the Sharks back into contention, taking the score from 18 to 55. However, Jarugu fell bowled to Gearing for 4, and when Malik was trapped lbw by Siddhanth Gopinath at 65 for 4, the required rate had climbed beyond reach.

Pranoy Ramankandath injected some late urgency with a spirited 15 from 14 balls, putting on 34 with Arya Maheshwaran for the fifth wicket. But Ramankandath was caught by Gearing off the bowling of Karthikeyan, and despite Maheshwaran remaining unbeaten on 14, the Sharks could only manage 114 for 5 from their full allocation. The 31-run defeat leaves Sonning with plenty to reflect on, particularly around bowling discipline, though the five bonus points earned in defeat offer some consolation in the BYCL Under 15 T20 Challenge West standings.
