Sonning 4th XI Fall Short as Murugaraj's Anchor Innings Goes in Vain at Sandhurst

Sonning 4th XI's battling total of 143 for 5 proved insufficient as Sandhurst chased down the target with nearly 15 overs to spare in this Division 9C encounter at Sandhurst Cricket Club on Saturday.

Sent in to bat after Sandhurst won the toss and elected to field, Sonning found themselves in early difficulty against an outstanding opening spell from Russell Stone, who produced miserly figures of 2 for 7 from his eight overs, five of which were maidens. Sid Anilkumar fell for just 3, caught by Shyam Shrestha off Stone's bowling with the score on 14, before Dhiren Panchal followed for 6, caught behind by Luke O'Neil off the same bowler with the total at 30. When Bharat Rathod departed for 4, caught by O'Neil off captain Archie Sanders, Sonning were stuttering at 35 for 3.

Charlie Koslicki briefly counter-attacked with 9 from 18 balls before being bowled by Mark Clapham, leaving Sonning at 45 for 4 and in serious trouble. It was at this point that the innings' defining partnership took shape, as Santhosh Murugaraj, who had patiently anchored the innings from the start, was joined by skipper Arun Raghavendra.

The pair added a crucial 87 runs for the fifth wicket, transforming the scoreboard from a precarious position into something altogether more competitive. Raghavendra was the more aggressive of the two, striking seven fours in his 41 from 70 balls, while Murugaraj continued his watchful accumulation. The partnership was broken only when Raghavendra was run out by Ravi Gadiraju with the score on 132. Murugaraj finished unbeaten on 52 from 125 deliveries, an innings of admirable determination if somewhat lacking in tempo, while Piyanshu Desai contributed a brisk unbeaten 8 from 7 balls at the death to push the total to 143.

The target, however, always looked within Sandhurst's reach, and openers Shrestha and Luke O'Neil set about the chase with purpose. The pair put on 52 for the first wicket before Isaac Blakey made the breakthrough, having O'Neil caught by wicketkeeper Koslicki for 17. Shrestha was particularly destructive, smashing nine fours in his 53 from 43 balls before Raghavendra had him bowled with the score at 91.

Sonning sensed an opportunity when two quick wickets fell at the same total — Gadiraju bowled by Raghavendra for a duck and Sachin Malhi bowled by James Charlton-Perez for nought — to leave Sandhurst wobbling at 99 for 4. Joe Donohue added to the pressure by bowling Jack O'Neil for 8, and suddenly the hosts were 122 for 5 with 22 still needed.

Perry Lewington, however, remained unmoved throughout the middle-order wobble. The number three batsman compiled an unbeaten 39 from 38 balls, threading six fours through the field with increasing confidence. Alongside Mark Clapham, who contributed an undefeated 7, Lewington steered Sandhurst home in just 25.2 overs, completing a five-wicket victory. Raghavendra's figures of 2 for 16 from four overs were the pick of the Sonning attack, while Donohue's economical 1 for 10 from three overs gave the visitors hope during that late middle-order collapse, but ultimately the total was never enough to seriously challenge the home side.
