Match Report

Sonning 3rd kept their winning start to the season with another excellent win away at Newbury.

On a murky and cloudy day, Sonning won the toss yet again and decided to bat first on a dodgy looking pitch. Sonning got off to a decent start, with Ali Driver, hitting couple of good shots but without any reward due to the awful outfield and on other side Naqash Tahir started his inngs aggressively. Naqash provided the necessary early propulsion and the speed of scoring was never really an issue throughout the innings. Ali nudged one straight to square leg when the opening partnership had reached 38 in 10 overs. The wicket brought Bu Thava (36), playing his first match of the season for 3rds and he kept the scoreboard ticking over with some aggressive stroke play. Naqash on other side was given a reprieve early on and he duly make the opposition pay with an aggressive 128 not out. He was especially sever on anything full and in process hit seven massive sixes loosing few balls in the process. By the end of the inngs the away captain was pleading as he had no spare ball left.

In between all this Bu made a quick fire 36 and the 3rd wicket partnership had reached 50 when Bu tried to hit one out of the ground was stumped. The wicket brought Captain Waqas Tahir(5) to the crease but he couldn’t disturb the scores and was caught at point. The wicket brought Ed Gadd (14) and the instructions were clear to up the run rate. Ed hit couple of mighty blows and he was stumped too. In came Khalilur Rehman(25*) and he with Naqash continued where the earlier partnership had left off. Captain conveyed the messaged to the middle to up the rate as an early declaration was on the card. Khalil made a quick fire 25 hitting some powerful stroke and one huge six over mid-on. Naqash on other hand was going briskly and he reached his well-deserved 100 with a four to the square leg boundary. Sonning declared on 238/4 in 40 overs. The 6th wicket partnership had stretched to 90 in just 10 overs.

After the tea, Sonning started with Phil Wilding and Vivek Vasist to open the bowling. Phil bowled a very good opening spell without any reward with couple of tough chances going down. Vivek on the other end was bowling an excellent spell. He was unlucky too with couple of chances going down. Soon Sonning took their first wicket when Vivek was rewarded with his probing line and length when the opening batsmen played on. Aamir Tahir replaced Phil and got into the action straight away. He got his first wicket on his second ball and opposition were 2 wickets down in no time.

Captain brought himself on after 12 overs in search of quick wickets and it didn’t took him long to make his mark on the game, taking the first wicket in second over. The opposition were 55/4 inside 16 overs. The home side put some resistant with some aggressive batting. Aamir bowled an excellent spell of fast bowling by taking crucial wickets at the right time and he finished with 7-3-17-3. Indeveer Sahota replaced Aamir and He was soon among the wickets with some excellent straight bowling. He finished with three wicket in 2.2. With captain Waqas taking two quick wicket from other end, the opposition had lost 5 wickets in just three overs and Sonning had bowled the opposition inside 31 overs for only 114 runs.

An excellent batting and bowling performance from everybody. Ed and Khalil led the line in the fielding. Nick was excellent behind the wickets on a very difficult pitch and did a brilliant job – conceding only a single bye. A man of the match performance from Naqash getting his person best for Sonning.

A good team effort and excellent win.
