Rothermel's Defiant 33 Not Enough as Scorchers Fall Short Against Emmbrook & Bearwood

Sonning U15 Scorchers suffered a narrow defeat at King George's Field on Wednesday evening, posting 101 for 9 from their 20 overs before Emmbrook & Bearwood chased down the target with an over to spare in this BYCL Under 15 T20 Blast contest.

After Emmbrook & Bearwood won the toss and inserted the hosts, the Scorchers' innings got off to a torrid start. Captain Jack Durrant and Santhosh Murugaraj opened but the early damage was swift and decisive. Murugaraj fell for 6 off just three balls, caught by Sriram Srimushnam off the bowling of Sankalp Avadhanula, before Reyansh Setia was bowled by the same bowler for a duck two balls into his innings. When Durrant himself was cleaned up by opposition skipper Max Keep for 8, the Scorchers were reeling at 17 for 3.

The slide continued as Charlie Koslicki was bowled first ball by Keep, and Shubh Vedalanakar departed for 4, leaving Sonning in deep trouble at 23 for 5. Marcus Hawkins dug in at the other end, occupying the crease for 37 balls as he and George Rothermel set about the repair work. Their partnership of 34 for the sixth wicket was the crucial stand that gave the innings some respectability, with Hawkins contributing 13 before he was caught off Ben Keep's bowling.

Rothermel proved the backbone of the Scorchers' innings, carrying his bat for an unbeaten 33 from 42 deliveries, striking five fours in a composed knock that held the lower order together. He shared a valuable 31-run stand for the eighth wicket with Siddharth Kumar, who made a brisk 8 from 11 balls including a boundary. Eshan Wang-Kumar added a cameo of 5 not out from three balls at the death to push the total past the hundred mark. Keep was the pick of the Emmbrook & Bearwood attack, returning excellent figures of 3 for 9 from his three overs, while Avadhanula claimed 2 for 15.

In reply, the visitors lost Avadhanula early for 1, caught by Yusuf Malik off Rothermel's bowling with the score on 16. However, Srimushnam and Arjun Ravi then took control with a commanding partnership of 49 for the second wicket that effectively steered the chase. Srimushnam was the dominant force, striking 31 from 35 balls with five boundaries, while Ravi contributed 17 from 24 deliveries with two fours before being run out by Durrant with the score on 65.

Ibrahim Mir kept up the momentum with a quickfire 12 from 10 balls, but the Scorchers' bowlers fought hard to claw their way back into the contest. Rinchhen Lama was the standout with the ball, taking 3 for 15 from his three overs, including the key wickets of Srimushnam, Oscar Earl and Shiven Sheth in quick succession. The visitors wobbled from 80 for 3 to 90 for 8 as Reyansh Setia (1 for 7 from three overs with a maiden), Siddharth Kumar and Eshan Wang-Kumar all chipped in with wickets.

Captain Max Keep, however, held his nerve at number six, finishing unbeaten on 13 from 17 balls with two fours to guide Emmbrook & Bearwood home to 102 for 8 in 19 overs. Despite the Scorchers' spirited bowling fightback that saw five wickets fall for just 22 runs, the early batting collapse had left them defending too modest a total, with 22 extras in each innings reflecting the challenges both bowling attacks faced on the evening.
