Sabres Post Commanding 118-Run Victory at Wargrave

Sonning U13 Sabres delivered a dominant all-round display at Wargrave Cricket Club on Thursday evening, romping to a comprehensive victory in their BYCL Under 13 Challenge (Tier 2) East fixture. After being asked to bat first following Wargrave's decision to field at the toss, the Sabres amassed an imposing 177 for 3 from their 20 overs before restricting the hosts to just 59 for 4 in reply.

The foundation of Sonning's formidable total was laid by openers Finley Andrews and Muhammad Shah, who were joined at number three by Sibikumar Muthukumaran after Andrews retired not out on 25. The first-wicket partnership yielded a crucial 84 runs, with captain Shah contributing a patient 12 from 32 balls before being bowled by Jack Cowin. Muthukumaran proved the star of the innings, blazing 31 from just 18 deliveries, an attacking knock laced with four boundaries and a six that left the Wargrave bowling in disarray.

Andrews set the tone at the top of the order with a composed 25 off 27 balls, finding the boundary rope four times before retiring. His measured approach allowed Muthukumaran to play with freedom at the other end, and the pair's contrasting styles proved highly effective against a Wargrave attack that struggled for consistency throughout.

Charlie Koslicki maintained the momentum with a brisk 15 from 18 balls, striking three fours before being caught by wicketkeeper Iggy Crawford off Harry Buntine's bowling. Koslicki shared a productive 63-run stand for the second wicket with Finn Reid, who anchored the latter stages of the innings superbly. Reid finished unbeaten on 24 from 17 balls, while Idris Malik's cameo of 11 from just seven deliveries, including two fours, added further impetus before he was caught by Buntine off Dominic Jackson. Wargrave's bowlers were punished by a generous extras tally of 59, with 39 wides proving particularly costly.

The Wargrave reply never gained any traction against disciplined Sonning bowling. Elias Haidari struck early, clean bowling Leo Helsby for a duck to leave the hosts 8 for 1. Vinudi Jayawardana Weerasinghe then produced the most economical spell of the match, returning excellent figures of 2-0-2-1 with a maiden, dismissing opener Harry Buntine for 6 when Finley Andrews took the catch.

Samuel Forsaith was run out for 1 at 26 for 3, and when captain Shah bowled Alexander Baglow for 2 to make it 34 for 4, the match was effectively over as a contest. Shah's two overs were miserly in the extreme, conceding just two runs while claiming his wicket with a maiden to boot. Dominic Jackson offered the only resistance for Wargrave, remaining unbeaten on 13 from 31 balls, but the required run rate had long since spiralled beyond reach.

Fawaz Attiq also deserves mention for a tidy spell of 2-0-6-0, keeping things tight through the middle overs as Wargrave's innings petered out, finishing well short on 59 for 4 from their 16 overs. The Sabres' victory was built on contributions across the board — powerful batting from Muthukumaran and Reid, intelligent captaincy from Shah, and a disciplined collective bowling effort that never allowed Wargrave's batters to settle.
