U15 Sharks Fall Short at Brownsfield Despite Spirited Chase Against Thatcham Town

Sonning U15 Sharks travelled to Brownsfield on 9th July for a BYCL Under 15 T20 Challenge West fixture against Thatcham Town, and despite winning the toss and electing to field, captain Charlie Koslicki's side were unable to prevent the hosts from posting a competitive total and ultimately fell 21 runs short in the chase.

Thatcham Town's innings was built on strong contributions at the top of the order. Opener Alfie Smith struck three boundaries in a brisk 21 off 18 balls, putting on 45 for the first wicket with Shray Amin before being caught by Marcus Hawkins. Amin continued to anchor the innings, scoring 24 off 31 deliveries with four fours, while Freddie Bartholomew hit a punchy 19 off 16 balls including two sixes. A 22-run second-wicket stand between Amin and Bartholomew pushed the score to 67 before both fell in quick succession, with Yuvraj Singh Kaur claiming Amin's wicket, caught by Yusuf Malik.

The most destructive innings came from Shay Palmer, who smashed an unbeaten 32 off just 18 balls, clearing the ropes twice and striking four fours. Palmer's 33-run partnership with Thomas Pike for the fourth wicket propelled Thatcham past the 100 mark and gave the innings crucial late impetus. A middle-order wobble saw Thatcham lose four wickets for just 22 runs in the closing overs, but the damage had been done as they posted 131 for 8 from their 20 overs.

The Sharks' bowling attack was shared across nine bowlers, with Nishal Jarugu producing the most economical spell, taking 2 for 6 from his two overs including the wickets of Jack Davies and Vinayak Sreejith in quick succession. Arnav Duvvuri also impressed with 2 for 18 from three overs, while Elias Haidari was tidy at the top, conceding just 10 runs from his three overs for one wicket. Partha Pal chipped in with the important scalp of Thomas Pike, bowling him for 6.

In reply, Duvvuri gave the Sharks a flying start, cracking three fours in a rapid 16 off 11 balls before being caught by Bartholomew off Palmer's bowling with the score on 21. The key partnership of the chase came between Yusuf Malik and Marcus Hawkins, who put on 44 for the second wicket. Hawkins was the standout performer with the bat, compiling a composed 31 off 35 balls with four boundaries before retiring not out. Malik played the supporting role with 7 off 27 balls before being stumped by Alfie Smith off Bartholomew's bowling.

At 65 for 2, the Sharks were well placed in the chase, but the required rate continued to climb. Yuvraj Singh Kaur contributed 12 off 20 balls and Nishal Jarugu matched that score off 22 deliveries with two fours, the pair adding 35 for the fourth wicket. However, both fell in the latter stages — Yuvraj run out by Krishansh Chablani and Jarugu caught behind by Smith off Chablani's bowling — and the momentum swung firmly in Thatcham's favour. Despite 31 extras from the Thatcham bowlers, including 27 wides, the Sharks could only manage 110 for 7 from their 20 overs.

Hawkins' innings and Jarugu's all-round contribution with both bat and ball were clear positives for the Sharks, while the willingness to use all available bowlers showed commendable squad involvement. Thatcham Town took the 20 league points, though Sonning earned 8 bonus points — four for batting and four for bowling — reflecting a performance that was competitive throughout even if the target ultimately proved beyond reach.
