Sophie Smith's Sublime 81 Not Out Steers Sonning Women to Victory at Chalfont

Sonning Women's 1st XI chased down 157 with eight wickets in hand and more than three overs to spare as Sophie Smith produced a match-winning knock of 81 not out against Chalfont St Peter in Division 3 A at Chalfont St Peter Cricket Club on 31 August.

Captain Rita Green won the toss and chose to field first, but the decision looked as though it might backfire as Chalfont St Peter's openers Anita Thorose and Sue Cemlyn-Jones built a solid platform of 35 for the first wicket. Cemlyn-Jones contributed 11 from 23 balls before being trapped lbw by Michaela Herrett, who returned figures of 1-34 from her five overs. The breakthrough, however, did little to stem the flow of runs.

Thorose and skipper Tanya Westney then combined for a commanding second-wicket partnership of 111 that threatened to put the match beyond Sonning's reach. Westney batted fluently for 42 off 49 deliveries, striking two boundaries, while Thorose anchored the innings throughout. The crucial intervention came from Geethika Jyothis, who bowled Westney to break the stand at 146-2. Jyothis was the pick of the Sonning attack, finishing with tidy figures of 1-18 from five overs, including a maiden. A sharp run out accounted for Leonie De Graag for 3, but Thorose remained unbeaten on a superb 73 from 75 balls as Chalfont posted 156-3 from their 25 overs. Extras totalling 26, including 21 wides, gave the hosts a significant boost.

Sonning's reply got off to a shaky start when Green was bowled by Jess Holdship with the score on 17. Jyothis came to the crease and counter-attacked with purpose, hitting two fours in her 14 off 20 balls before falling lbw to Kanak Kohli at 57-2. At that stage, the required rate was climbing and Chalfont sensed an opportunity.

What followed was a masterclass from Smith, who seized control of the chase with an array of crisp stroke-play. The wicketkeeper-batter peppered the boundary, cracking 11 fours in an unbeaten 81 from just 59 balls. She found a willing partner in Sarah Wonham, who provided excellent support with a composed 22 not out from 48 deliveries. Their unbroken third-wicket stand guided Sonning home with authority.

Chalfont's bowlers struggled for consistency, conceding 36 extras including 23 wides and four no-balls. Geet Gulia proved particularly expensive, going for 36 from four overs, while Rebecca Lowe's 4.5 overs leaked 27 runs with seven wides. The lack of discipline with the ball ultimately proved costly as Sonning reached 157-2 in 21.5 overs.

The victory earned Sonning a full 25 league points while Chalfont took away 5, with Thorose's fine innings at least securing her side four batting bonus points. Smith's commanding knock was the decisive performance of the afternoon, turning what could have been a tricky chase into a comfortable eight-wicket triumph on the road.
