Sabres Fall Short as Newbury's Top Order Proves Too Strong at Knowl Hill

Sonning U13 Sabres suffered a comprehensive defeat at the hands of Newbury in the BYCL Under 13 Challenge (Tier 1) West fixture at Knowl Hill on 19th July, bowled out for 95 in pursuit of a formidable total of 184.

Captain Vihaan Bangera won the toss and elected to field, but the Sabres' bowling attack struggled to contain a rampant Newbury top order. Openers Aviraj Singh and Luc Weaver set the tone with an explosive start, both retiring not out on 31 and 30 respectively. Singh struck four boundaries from his 23 deliveries, while Weaver was equally fluent with five fours from 24 balls. Akshat Sriwastava continued the onslaught, smashing three fours and a six in a blistering 29 off 23 balls before being bowled by Utkarsh Sinha.

The Sabres' discipline with the ball proved costly, conceding 47 extras — including 31 wides and 14 no-balls across the innings. Musa Khan's solitary over went for 14 runs, with seven wides and two no-balls, while Sebastian Cook conceded 27 from his two overs including six no-balls. The extras alone would have constituted a significant innings total, effectively handing Newbury runs without the batters needing to play a shot.

Wicketkeeper Divik Gupta was the standout performer with the ball for the Sabres, returning figures of 3-23 from his three overs. He removed Trishaan Thakur, caught by Abhinav Surisetty, before bowling Elian Bessan for 13 and Harry Clark-Lee for 1 in quick succession to stem the flow of runs in the closing overs. Sinha also contributed with the important wicket of Sriwastava, finishing with 1-22 from three tidy overs, while Izaan Baloch produced sharp fielding to run out Wilf Busby for 14.

The chase began disastrously for the Sabres, with captain Bangera caught by Luc Weaver off Rufus Horsman's bowling for a first-ball duck. At 0-1, the home side were immediately under pressure, and when Baloch fell bowled by Harry Clark-Lee for 8 and Dhruv Reddy Kantigari was dismissed for a golden duck by the same bowler, Sonning were reeling at 28-3.

Sinha proved the lone beacon of resistance in the Sabres' batting line-up, crafting a composed 25 from 31 deliveries with three boundaries. He anchored a crucial 41-run partnership for the fourth wicket alongside Gupta, who occupied the crease for 25 balls but could manage only three runs. When Rory Sharpe bowled Gupta to break the stand at 69-4, the match effectively slipped away from Sonning. Sinha himself fell three runs later, also bowled by Sharpe, and the lower order crumbled swiftly.

Clark-Lee finished with impressive figures of 3-17 from his three overs, while Sharpe's miserly spell of 2-6 from three overs choked the Sabres' middle order. Akshat Sriwastava added a maiden to his day's work, returning 1-3 from two overs as Newbury's varied attack shared the wickets around, with eight bowlers used in total. The Sabres were eventually bowled out for 95 in 18.3 overs, falling 89 runs short of the target. Despite the heavy defeat, Sonning took five bonus points from the match — three batting and two bowling — offering some consolation from a challenging afternoon.
