U15 Sharks Chase Down 103 with Ease as Suriarachchi Stars with Bat

Sonning U15 Sharks produced a composed all-round display to defeat West Ilsley in the BYCL Under 15 T20 Challenge on 8 June, chasing down a target of 103 with two and a half overs to spare and just two wickets down.

Captain Shreyas Koppole won the toss and elected to field, a decision vindicated by a disciplined bowling effort that restricted West Ilsley to 102 for 5 from their full allocation of 20 overs. Sonning used ten bowlers in the innings, sharing the workload impressively. Surya Karangad (2-0-5-0) and Timothy Jenner (2-0-5-0) were the most economical, while the wickets were spread across four different bowlers: Reyansh Setia (2-0-9-1), Neel Kumar (3-0-10-1), Nirgun Madireddi (2-0-8-1), and Kishan Akula (2-0-6-1).

West Ilsley's innings was anchored by captain George Briggs, who top-scored with 31 from 32 balls, striking five fours before retiring not out. Thomas Robinson contributed 19 from 27 balls at the top of the order before being bowled by Setia, while Armando Ali occupied the crease for 29 deliveries for his 8 runs. Arthur Keevil departed for a duck, caught off the bowling of Kumar, and Jack Holloway managed just 1 before being cleaned up by Akula. George Mercer provided late impetus with a brisk 21 from just 10 balls, but the home side's total of 102 always looked below par.

The Sharks' reply got off to a strong start through opener Kanishka Suriarachchi, who anchored the chase superbly with an unbeaten 31. His opening partner Jenner contributed 6 before being caught by George Briggs off the bowling of George Richardson, bringing Koppole to the crease. The skipper was unable to convert his start, falling lbw to Charlie Pusey for 5, leaving Sonning at two down with work still to do.

Toby Whitehead steadied the ship with a fluent 20 not out, batting with authority alongside Suriarachchi to rebuild the innings and take the chase deep into comfortable territory. Kishan Akula then came in and added an unbeaten 11, ensuring there were no further alarms as the Sharks reached their target in 17.3 overs.

Extras played a significant role in the match, with West Ilsley conceding 30 extras in the Sonning innings — including 16 wides — which accounted for nearly a third of the Sharks' total. The home side's bowling attack, led by Charlie Pusey (4-0-26-1) and George Richardson (3-0-15-1), struggled to contain the scoring, with none of the six bowlers used managing to maintain a run rate below five an over.

The comfortable eight-wicket victory demonstrated the depth of the Sharks' squad, with contributions across the board in both innings. The disciplined bowling effort, which saw all ten outfield players given a turn with the ball, set the platform for what proved to be a straightforward chase.
