Match Report

Sonning Women Fall Short as Wargrave Post Commanding Total

Wargrave won the toss and opted to bat first in this Super 8 Development Group D encounter on 29 May 2022, and their decision proved decisive as they posted an imposing 129 for 1 from their 16 overs, a target that ultimately proved well beyond Sonning's reach.

Captain Poppy Burnyeat set the tone at the top of the order, striking a brisk 24 from just 12 balls to give Wargrave early momentum. Allison Holloway contributed a composed 15 from 12 deliveries at number three, while the lower order kept the scoreboard ticking along handsomely. Ruth Payne added 14 from 13 balls and Tia Veevers chipped in with 13 from 11, ensuring the visitors finished their innings with real impetus.

Sonning's bowlers found conditions difficult, with extras proving costly — 33 in total, including 30 wides. Grace Phillips was the only Sonning bowler to claim a wicket, finishing with 1 for 30 from her four overs. Elinor Longridge offered the most economical figures, conceding just 9 runs from her two overs, but wickets were hard to come by as the Wargrave batting line-up shared the scoring burden effectively throughout.

Facing a daunting target of 130, Sonning's reply never quite gathered the required momentum. Opener Siobhan Davis top-scored with 12 from 15 balls before being dismissed, while Melissa Pengraeve contributed 9 from 16 and Sandhya Sharma and Sophie Eckley each added 8. Every batter managed to get a start, but none was able to convert into a match-defining knock.

Sharon Fleming, captaining the side, struck a useful 7 from 8 balls at number eight, but by that stage the asking rate had climbed beyond reach. Sonning's innings closed on 83 for 2 from 16 overs, leaving them 46 runs short of the target.

Wargrave's bowling was disciplined, with Sophie Nice the pick of the attack, claiming 1 for 11 from three tidy overs. Tia Veevers was equally miserly, conceding just 8 runs from her three overs without a wide to her name. While extras again featured heavily — 26 in total from the Wargrave attack — the visitors' bowlers did enough to keep Sonning well in check throughout.

The result saw Wargrave claim six league points to Sonning's one, a fair reflection of a match in which the visitors held the upper hand from the moment they won the toss. For captain Fleming and her side, the challenge of converting promising individual contributions into substantial partnerships remains the key area to address heading into their next fixture.
