Spartans Undone by Extras as West Reading Claim Victory at Waingels

West Reading secured a comfortable win over Sonning U13 Spartans in the BYCL Under 13 Challenge (Tier 2) West fixture at Waingels College on Sunday, chasing down 157 and then restricting the hosts to 127 for 9 in reply.

Captain Divik Gupta won the toss and chose to field first, but the Spartans struggled to contain West Reading's batting line-up. A staggering 78 extras — including 53 wides and 18 no-balls — swelled the visitors' total far beyond what their batsmen alone contributed. Hasan Habil was the standout performer with the bat, striking 27 from 28 balls with three fours before retiring not out, while Husain Habil added a useful 18 from 31 deliveries, hitting three boundaries of his own. Alex Murray-Jones anchored the lower order with an unbeaten 13 off 25 balls as West Reading posted 156 for 6 from their 20 overs.

The Spartans' bowlers found it difficult to maintain their line and length throughout the innings. Izaan Baloch conceded 19 wides in his three overs, though he did claim the important wicket of Yuvraj Singh, bowling him for 6. Aarib Ansari produced the most disciplined spell, conceding no wides in his three overs and clean bowling Aryan Sharma for a duck. Gupta chipped in with a wicket of his own, having Ahmed Imran caught by Baloch for 5, while Vinudi Jayawardana Weerasinghe delivered the most economical figures of 1-0-2-0.

Finley Andrews was sharp in the field, involved in two run outs — dismissing both Avaneesh Senthilkumar and Husain Habil — while Mitul Kalidindi ran out Irvinjot Singh for a diamond duck. These moments of fielding excellence gave the Spartans glimpses of hope, but the damage from extras had already been done.

The Spartans' chase began disastrously when Nicholas Jones was bowled by Ahmed Imran for a golden duck with the score on just 1. Andrews and Kalidindi then steadied things with a second-wicket partnership worth 38 runs, the most productive stand of the Spartans' innings. Andrews contributed 6 from 15 balls before falling to Husain Habil, and Kalidindi batted with composure for his 10 off 26 deliveries before Imran struck again. The West Reading captain was devastating with the ball, finishing with figures of 3 for 9 from three overs, removing Jones, Kalidindi, and Azraq Zamaan to rip through the Spartans' middle order.

A collapse from 47 for 2 to 64 for 6 effectively ended the contest. Gupta was run out for 2, Ansari managed 8 before being run out himself, and Zamaan fell for a duck as the wickets tumbled in quick succession. Izaan Baloch and Nikhil Oruganti could muster only 1 apiece, and when Thomas Waite was bowled by Zohaib Noman for 6, the Spartans were 100 for 9 and well adrift of the target.

Joseph Parker provided a silver lining at the death, batting with real intent in an unbroken tenth-wicket stand with Jayawardana Weerasinghe. Parker struck three fours in his unbeaten 17 from 20 balls, while Jayawardana Weerasinghe contributed a composed 8 not out from 14 deliveries. Their partnership of 27 added respectability to the scoreboard, but the Spartans ultimately finished on 127 for 9, falling 29 runs short. West Reading's own extras tally of 68 — featuring 40 wides — kept the scoreboard ticking, but the hosts simply could not build the partnerships needed to overhaul the target.
