Match Report
Scorchers Fall Short as Wokingham's Top Order Proves Decisive
Sonning U11 Scorchers suffered a 28-run defeat to Wokingham U11 Golden Oaks in the BYCL Under 11 T20 Blast West on 10th August, as the visitors' top three batsmen laid a foundation that proved too steep to chase.
Captain Alexander Hatchett-Walker won the toss and elected to field, but Wokingham's openers made Sonning pay early. Shlok Deshmukh struck five fours in a brisk 27 from 21 balls before retiring, while Viren Nadipalli was equally destructive, smashing five boundaries of his own in a rapid 25 off just 18 deliveries. The pair's assault, combined with a steady 61-run opening partnership before Dale Buchel fell for 18, gave Wokingham a commanding platform.
The Scorchers' bowlers toiled through the middle overs as Parth Sangal anchored the innings with an unbeaten 15 from 28 balls. However, Sonning fought back superbly in the closing stages. Jacob Garner produced a magnificent spell of 3 for 4 from his two overs, clean bowling Emilia Brand-Smith and Louie Harte while having Joe Mckehon caught by Arthur Teed. Zain Baloch complemented Garner's efforts with 2 for 11, bowling Poppy Pritchard and taking a catch off his own bowling to dismiss Aadit Khandelwal. Oscar Williams also contributed with the key wicket of captain Buchel, caught and bowled for 18. That late flurry of wickets restricted Wokingham to 126 for 6, but with 33 extras conceded, the damage had already been done.
The Scorchers' reply began disastrously. Archie Jansen was bowled by Deshmukh for 2 in the third ball of the innings, and Arthur Teed followed for a duck as Dale Buchel struck, leaving Sonning reeling at 6 for 2. Alexander Green and Jacob Garner steadied the ship with a partnership of 20, Green hitting two fours in his knock of 10 before falling bowled by Emilia Brand-Smith.
Hatchett-Walker injected urgency into the chase with an enterprising 14 from 12 balls, cracking three fours in a counter-attacking display. His partnership with Garner added 19 for the fifth wicket and briefly gave Sonning hope, but his run out — effected by Buchel — at 54 for 5 proved the decisive moment. From there, wickets fell at regular intervals as the required rate climbed beyond reach.
Garner battled gamely for his 10 from 35 balls, occupying the crease as partners came and went, but when he was caught by Louie Harte off the bowling of Poppy Pritchard with the score on 59 for 7, the chase was effectively over. A gritty 20-run partnership between Zain Baloch and Heet Panchal for the eighth wicket showed spirit, and late cameos from Seve Horton (6 off 6 balls) and Abubakar Waseem (6 not out off 3) added respectability to the total, but the Scorchers ultimately closed on 98 for 9 from their 20 overs.
Poppy Pritchard's figures of 2 for 8 from two overs were the pick of the Wokingham attack, while the visiting bowlers shared the wickets effectively, with Deshmukh and Nadipalli each bowling a maiden in tidy opening spells. For Sonning, Garner's outstanding 3 for 4 with the ball and Hatchett-Walker's 14 with the bat were the standout individual performances in what was ultimately a match settled by Wokingham's explosive start with the bat.
