Sharks Fall Short as Reading Post Commanding Total at Knowl Hill

Sonning U13 Sharks suffered a 60-run defeat to Reading in the BYCL Under 13 Challenge (Tier 1) North West fixture at Knowl Hill on 5th July, as the visitors' imposing total of 168 for 6 proved well beyond reach despite a valiant knock from Utkarsh Sinha.

Captain Advay Sood won the toss and inserted Reading, but the decision to field first yielded mixed results. Heet Panchal struck early, bowling Daniel Clack for 5 to leave Reading at 5 for 1, and Leo Ribbens produced sharp fielding to run out Vikyath Ragi with the score on 22. However, Dhvaneet Suthar anchored the Reading innings with a composed 30 from 34 balls, including three fours and a six, before retiring not out having put on a crucial 38-run partnership with captain Saswath Arunesh for the third wicket.

Muhammad Jalaluddin Usman removed Arunesh for 13, and Dhruv Reddy Kantigari bowled Sahib Singh Khatter cheaply for 2, briefly giving the Sharks hope at 65 for 4. But it was Gautam Singh who truly wrested the initiative away from Sonning, blazing an unbeaten 31 from just 13 deliveries, striking five fours and a six in a devastating cameo. His assault, combined with a damaging 61-run fifth-wicket stand, took the game away from the home side. Janardhan Kode added late impetus with an unbeaten 24 off 15 balls as Reading finished on a formidable 168 for 6.

The Sharks' bowling was undermined by extras, conceding 30 in total including 19 wides and 6 no-balls. Yuvaansh Sharma (1-20 from 3 overs) and Dhruv Reddy Kantigari (1-12 from 2 overs) were the most economical of the wicket-takers, while Utkarsh Sinha's run out of Aristo Voltaire was a bright moment in the field.

Chasing 169, the Sharks made a promising start thanks to an excellent 53-run opening partnership. Utkarsh Sinha was the standout performer with the bat, striking 29 from 30 balls with two fours and a six, providing the backbone of the innings. Izaan Baloch contributed 5 before falling bowled by Sharvil Jadav, who then removed Advay Sood for a golden duck in the same over to leave Sonning reeling at 53 for 2.

Sinha steadied the ship alongside Tavish Malik, adding 21 for the third wicket, but once Malik was bowled by Saswath Arunesh for 5, the innings collapsed dramatically. From 74 for 3, the Sharks lost six wickets for just 17 runs, slumping to 91 for 9. Aiden Angell was run out by Vikyath Ragi, and the devastating Janardhan Kode claimed two wickets in a single over to hasten the slide. Leo Ribbens offered brief resistance with a quickfire 11 from 8 balls before being run out by Arunesh, but there was no sustained fightback from the lower order.

The last pair of Yuvaansh Sharma (10 not out) and Dhruv Reddy Kantigari (9 not out) showed admirable resolve, adding an unbroken 17 runs for the final wicket to push the total to 108 for 9 from their 20 overs. The 38 extras in the Reading bowling attack, including 17 wides, kept the scoreboard ticking but were ultimately insufficient to bridge the gap. Reading's disciplined bowling attack, led by Sharvil Jadav's figures of 2-10 and Janardhan Kode's clinical 2-2 from his single over, ensured the visitors ran out comfortable winners.
