Match Report

Keast's Masterful Century Proves Too Much for Sonning at Wellington Oval

Sonning 1st XI suffered a comprehensive defeat at the hands of Wokingham 2nd XI in their Division 1B encounter at Wellington Oval on Saturday, bowled out for 136 in pursuit of 212. Matthew Keast's superb innings of 115 from 147 balls formed the backbone of the home side's total, and despite a spirited bowling display from Sonning, the visitors' batting order crumbled under sustained pressure from Wokingham's attack.

Wokingham captain Jarrett Bobb won the toss and elected to bat, but the decision looked questionable early on as Sonning struck twice in quick succession. Danyal Ghazi had Anthony Clapham caught by wicketkeeper Dhruv Peshkar for 6, before Damario Goodman removed Harry Warwick for just 3, again caught by Peshkar, leaving the hosts wobbling at 26 for 2.

What followed was a match-defining partnership of 80 between Thomas Hampton and Keast for the third wicket. Hampton contributed a brisk 41 from 55 balls, striking seven boundaries before Peter Higginbottom had him caught by Alex Mcloughlin. From that point, Keast took complete command. He reached his fifty from 54 balls and continued to accumulate runs with clinical precision, lacing 18 fours across his innings. Though wickets fell at the other end — Jack Fisher departing for a duck and Samarjeet Singh falling lbw to Mohammed Zahid for 9 — Keast anchored proceedings with partnerships of 32 and 33 for the fifth and sixth wickets respectively.

Goodman was the pick of the Sonning bowlers, returning excellent figures of 3 for 35 from his 15 overs, including three maidens. His dismissal of Bobb for a first-ball duck brought Wokingham to 173 for 7, but Keast pushed on, adding 30 with Ryan Pogson before finally falling caught by Goodman off Ghazi for 115. Higginbottom chipped in with 2 for 22 from seven tidy overs, while Ghazi finished with 2 for 51. Wokingham closed on 211 for 9 from their 50 overs — a total built almost entirely around one outstanding individual innings.

Sonning's reply began disastrously. Amaad Ali was bowled by Pogson without scoring in just the fifth ball of the innings, and opener Mcloughlin was run out by Keast for a duck shortly afterwards, leaving the visitors reeling at 2 for 2. Mohammed Zahid and Muhammad Ayub steadied matters with a partnership of 36 for the third wicket, Ayub contributing 15 before being caught behind by Keast off Anthony Clapham.

Zahid batted with composure, hitting five fours in his 37 from 48 balls, but once he fell caught by Daniel Longridge off the same bowler's bowling with the score on 58, the middle order offered little sustained resistance. Shenul Widanapathirana made 4, Sid Anilkumar was trapped lbw by Longridge for 5, and although Peshkar and Goodman put on 26 for the seventh wicket, the required rate was climbing beyond reach. Goodman's innings of 21 from 35 balls ended in unusual fashion when he was adjudged hit wicket off Singh.

A late counter-attack from Ghazi, who smashed 29 from just 21 deliveries including two sixes and three fours, added some respectability to the scorecard, but it was far too late to alter the outcome. Longridge was the most effective Wokingham bowler, taking 3 for 44 from 14 overs, while Clapham claimed 2 for 15 and Singh finished with 2 for 28. Sonning were bowled out for 136 in 37.1 overs, losing by 75 runs and collecting just 10 points to Wokingham's 26 in what proved a chastening afternoon for Higginbottom's side.
