Match Report
Peter Compton-Burnett's 83 Anchors Convincing Sonning Victory at Stoke Row
Sonning Sunday 1s travelled to The Les Clark Oval on 6th September and produced a dominant all-round display to defeat Peppard Stoke Row's Sunday Maharajas by 120 runs in this friendly fixture. Captain James Travers won the toss and elected to bat, a decision vindicated by a commanding batting performance that yielded 234 for 5 from 35 overs.
The early loss of William Travers, bowled by Max Roberts for 7, did little to dent Sonning's ambitions. Luke Compton-Burnett and N Syed combined to wrestle the initiative away from the home side, with Compton-Burnett striking a fluent 41 before being caught by wicketkeeper Mark Lambert off Nick Murdoch. Syed continued to accumulate, reaching 66 before falling lbw to Murdoch, who finished as the hosts' most economical bowler with 2 for 29 from his six overs.
The innings belonged, however, to Peter Compton-Burnett, who played the standout knock of the match with an authoritative 83. Batting at number four, he punished the Peppard Stoke Row attack across all areas of the ground and ensured Sonning maintained their momentum through the middle overs. He was eventually stumped by Lambert off Mark Harper, but by then the damage was well and truly done. Harper's six overs proved expensive, conceding 48 runs despite claiming two wickets, as Stephen Rayfield was also stumped off his bowling for 7.
James Travers (6 not out) and Aarav Tanguturi (11 not out) saw the innings through to its conclusion, with the lower order batsmen not required. The Peppard Stoke Row attack toiled gamely, using seven bowlers, but struggled to contain the scoring rate on a good batting surface.
Facing a daunting target of 235, Peppard Stoke Row's reply never truly gained traction. Matt Oxley set the tone with an outstanding opening spell of 5-1-7-1, removing Nicola Lee, caught by Peter Compton-Burnett, to leave the hosts under early pressure. A Della-Law was equally parsimonious from the other end, conceding just 15 runs from six tidy overs without reward. Chris Lee offered some resistance at the top of the order, hitting two fours in his knock of 26 before Pete Titus had him caught.
Nick Murdoch provided the most significant threat with a battling 41 that included four boundaries, but when N Syed was introduced into the attack, the complexion of the match changed decisively. Syed was devastating in a remarkable spell of 2 overs that yielded 4 wickets for just 12 runs. He bowled Murdoch to break the hosts' resistance, then trapped Brandon Murdoch lbw for a duck, had captain Mark Lambert caught by Peter Compton-Burnett for nought, and cleaned up Aled Roberts — who had briefly counterattacked with 13 including a six — to leave Peppard Stoke Row's innings in tatters.
The tail offered little resistance as Mike Eaton, Peter Compton-Burnett and James Travers each claimed a wicket to wrap up the innings for 114 all out in 31 overs. Nineteen extras, including 13 wides, padded the total but could not mask the gulf between the sides. It was a comprehensive away victory for Sonning, built on the platform of Peter Compton-Burnett's excellent 83 and sealed by Syed's devastating late burst with the ball.
