Sharks Chase Down 136 in Style as Sivaram and Muthukumaran Star at Knowl Hill

Sonning U13 Sharks secured a hard-fought victory over White Waltham at Knowl Hill on Tuesday evening, chasing down a target of 136 with eight balls to spare in this BYCL Under 13 Challenge fixture. Captain Jamie Dollinger won the toss and elected to field, a decision that ultimately proved decisive as his bowlers wrestled back control after a blistering start from the visitors.

White Waltham's innings was built on a rapid 76-run opening partnership, with Harri Jones the chief destroyer. Jones blazed 33 from just 14 deliveries, dispatching five fours and a six before retiring, while Milan Arora contributed a steady 14 from 30 balls at the other end. Jenson Edwards continued the assault with 18 from 18 balls, including four boundaries, and at 76 without loss, the visitors looked set for a mammoth total.

The Sharks' response with the ball was impressive. Saurav Sivaram was the standout performer, returning excellent figures of 2-10 from his three overs, bowling Thomas Edwards and Janav Bhatt to tighten the grip in the closing stages. Henry Bright complemented him superbly with 1-10 from three overs, including a maiden, and bowled Freddie Cook for a duck. Elijah Patel claimed the important wicket of Jenson Edwards, caught by Henry Bright, while Dollinger himself chipped in with 1-8 from two tidy overs, having Balthazar Leacock caught by Oliver Barker. A sharp run out of captain Adam Tucker by Dollinger further stemmed the flow, and White Waltham were restricted to 135-6 — a total that had looked far more threatening at the halfway stage.

The Sharks' reply stuttered early. Tejus Maddi fell caught off Hector Hewitt for 5, and Oliver Barker was trapped lbw by Freddie Scrimshaw for just 1, leaving Sonning at 13-2. When Dollinger was caught by Hewitt off Adam Tucker's bowling for 6, the Sharks were 35-3 and the chase was in the balance.

What followed was the match-defining partnership. Sivaram, who had already starred with the ball, combined with Sibikumar Muthukumaran to add 55 crucial runs for the fourth wicket. Muthukumaran was the more aggressive of the pair, striking five fours in his unbeaten 32 from 25 balls, while Sivaram anchored the innings with composure and well-timed strokeplay on his way to 30 from 24 deliveries before retiring. The pair took the game away from White Waltham, moving the score from 35-3 to 90-4 and putting Sonning firmly in the driving seat.

Charlie Bright kept the momentum going with a quickfire 10 from eight balls, finding the boundary twice before being stumped by Jones off Freddie Cook. Even when Suvir Jaryal and Henry Bright fell to Milan Arora's late spell of 2-11, the damage had been done. Daniel Moseley struck a brisk unbeaten 6 from five balls, and with Elijah Patel at the other end, the Sharks crossed the line at 137-6 in 18.4 overs.

It was a complete team performance from the Sharks, with contributions across the board. The bowling unit shared six wickets between four bowlers, the fielding was sharp when it mattered most, and the middle-order batting rescued what had been a precarious position. White Waltham will feel frustrated having posted 76 without loss and ending with only 135, while Jones's explosive 33 and Arora's tidy figures with the ball were worthy performances in a losing cause.
