Match Report

Despite the pontification of a 7/2 field and spreading the field from ball one, Kidmoore End scored at 5 an over in 52 overs which Sonning has exceeded in our previous two victories.

We did not have the right ethic from the start of the game with late arrival and incomplete Press photograph. Having lost the toss for the third time in a row I was not afforded the previous privilege of being inserted.

We contained Kidmore End to 3 runs and under per over for most of the match and as would be expected the rate increased with cavalier intent lower in the order.

Our last 6 overs were well managed and the bowlers did well but still managed to contain Kidmore End to 5 an over a rate Sonning has been previously achieving with ease.

Jackson starting our attack carrying an unknown shin problem bowled 6 overs with some discomfort and to my chagrin could neither bowl nor move in his Cheetah like manner for the rest of the match. Harvey was consistent in his leg side opening deliveries but worked hard to get two wickets with Jackson being the recipient of both catches. Jackson’s second catch to dismiss Safraz, who threatened demolition, was an excellent Cricketing catch at deep gulley a ball skied very high with Jackson calling early and manoeuvring beautifully to take a fantastic reversed catch. One of the most difficult in Cricket!

For the first time we are chasing and surprisingly tea was taken in some silence and the mood disconcerting with only Rintoul adding some frivolity.. Benning sitting with me at tea was positive. Scott having filled Hill’s big boots expressed a preference for a lower batting position if necessary but rallied to fill my position. My injury diagnosed as a stress fracture impeded movement and I batted lower than normal.

As would be expected at some time we started badly with Smith being dismissed caught first ball of the match. Benning followed soon after but van der Walt with Scott Stevens stabilised the innings. Both batted well with van der Walt scoring rapidly to 58 out. Scott Stevens was joined by Adeel and both delivered another good partnership. Scott went LBW for 80 and Adeel later went for a very mature 32 being sixth out.

The resistance after that was poor especially from the Captain who should have steadied the Ship and delivered victory.

Both Ryan Wilson and Steve Simmons performed magnificently and I thank them both.

We had our wake up call…. Purley on Thames look out.
