Kestrels Fall Short as Extras-Laden Contest Goes Cookham Dean's Way
Sonning U9 Kestrels travelled to Ricketts Field on 24th May for a BYCL Under 9 Super 8s North East league fixture against Cookham Dean's Under 9 Titans, but despite a spirited batting display, the Kestrels were unable to defend their total in a match heavily influenced by extras on both sides.
Captain Ronith Pera won the toss and elected to bat first, and it was Younus Ahmed who seized the initiative at the top of the order. Ahmed struck a superb 26 from just 13 balls, dispatching four boundaries and clearing the rope once in an innings that provided the backbone of the Kestrels' score. His aggressive approach set the tone early and gave Sonning a platform to build upon.
Contributions came from across the order, with Siddhartha Yanamadala (8 off 12 balls) and Oliver Gomez (8 off 11 balls) both finding the boundary once apiece. Abdul-Ahad Baig chipped in with 7, while Alexander Cook added a handy 7 from 14 deliveries. Jake Burkinshaw struck a four in his innings of 6, and Ronith Pera managed 5 with a boundary of his own. The Kestrels lost eight wickets across their 20 overs, with Liam Privey proving the most effective Cookham Dean bowler, claiming 3 wickets from his three overs while conceding just 13 runs. Fraser Mace and Adrian Molesworth each took two wickets to keep the Sonning total in check.
With 77 extras supplementing the 76 runs scored from the bat, the Kestrels' total was bolstered considerably, though the precise final target was shaped by the pairs format and its dismissal deductions. Cookham Dean's bowling was generous with wides, conceding 52 in total, while 15 no-balls further inflated the extras column.
In reply, Cookham Dean's chase was anchored by their captain Adrian Molesworth, who top-scored with an assured 20 off 21 balls, striking three fours in the process. George Collins contributed 11 from 24 deliveries at the top of the order, while Liam Privey added a brisk 9 from 9 balls towards the end of the innings to ensure the hosts crossed the line.
Abdul-Ahad Baig was the standout performer with the ball for Sonning, delivering a miserly four-over spell that yielded two maidens and two wickets for just 12 runs — a remarkably disciplined effort in the context of the match. Siddhartha Yanamadala also impressed, picking up a wicket in his two overs for 8 runs, while Leonardo Camilleri claimed the other Kestrels scalp. However, the Sonning bowling attack collectively conceded 76 wides, which proved decisive as Cookham Dean reached 144 for 6 from their 20 overs, with a staggering 95 extras making up the bulk of their total.
The sheer volume of extras in the second innings ultimately proved too much for the Kestrels to overcome. While the young Sonning side showed plenty of promise — particularly through Ahmed's explosive batting and Baig's excellent bowling — the inability to control the extras column in the field handed the initiative to the home side. Cookham Dean's Titans claimed the victory and the two league points at Ricketts Field.
