Match Report
Eagles Fall Short as Frecknall's Masterclass Carries Royal Ascot to Victory
Sonning U9 Eagles won the toss and chose to bat first at King George's Field in this U9 Super 8s – East league fixture, but were unable to post a competitive total as Royal Ascot's bowlers applied consistent pressure throughout the 20-over innings.
The Eagles struggled to build momentum with the bat, managing just 37 runs from the blade as extras contributed a remarkable 51 to their total of 88. Havishreddy Basireddy top-scored for Sonning with 7 runs from 14 balls, while Alexander Hatchett-Walker chipped in with 5 off 14 deliveries. Jasper Hawkins added 4 and Hugo King contributed 3, but no Sonning batter was able to truly dominate the opposition attack.
The damage with the ball for Royal Ascot was led by Teddy Stanton, who produced a superb spell of 3-0-13-5, including a maiden over. Benjamin Frecknall was equally impressive, claiming 3 wickets for just 8 runs from his 3 overs. Josh Smith bowled with excellent control, conceding only 1 run from his 2 overs while also picking up a wicket and bowling a maiden. Between them, Royal Ascot's leading trio accounted for 9 of the 13 dismissals.
In reply, Royal Ascot chased down the target with considerable ease, posting 123 for 11 from their 20 overs. The innings belonged emphatically to Benjamin Frecknall, who blazed a remarkable 41 from just 24 balls, striking nine boundaries in an innings that effectively put the match beyond Sonning's reach. His devastating hitting proved the decisive difference between the two sides.
Ayoub Khokhar provided strong support at the top of the order with 17 off 15 balls, including a boundary, while Josh Smith contributed a useful 8 from 13 deliveries lower down. Captain Dhruv Maity made 6, and both Teddy Stanton and Henry Hide scored 5 apiece to ensure the runs were spread across the batting card.
Sonning's best performer with the ball was Arjun Chirunamala, who was the pick of the Eagles' attack with figures of 3-0-17-4. His four wickets gave Sonning hope at various stages, and he proved difficult for the Royal Ascot batters to get away. Alexander Hatchett-Walker bowled tidily for his 2 wickets from 3 overs, conceding just 12 runs without a single wide or no-ball. Seve Horton also claimed a wicket, though his 2 overs proved expensive at 19 runs.
Despite the efforts of Chirunamala and Hatchett-Walker in restricting Royal Ascot at times, Frecknall's outstanding knock with the bat — combined with his earlier bowling exploits — proved too much for Sonning to overcome. Royal Ascot ran out comfortable winners by 35 runs, collecting 20 league points in the process and leaving the Eagles to reflect on a match where the inability to convert starts with the bat ultimately proved costly.
