Match Report

Scorchers Dominate as Chib's Stunning 42 and Dowse's Hat-Trick Seal Emphatic Victory

Sonning U15 Scorchers produced a commanding all-round display at home on 22 July, posting 173 for 5 before bowling out East & West Hendred for just 35 to claim a comprehensive victory in the U15 Hundred Pool 4.

Captain Max Murphy won the toss and elected to bat, a decision vindicated by the Scorchers' explosive start. Harrison Lott set the tone at the top of the order, striking three fours and a six in a breezy 29 from 23 balls. Although Aveer Sidhu fell early for 3, run out by George Morrissey, Lott and Murphy put on 30 for the second wicket to establish a strong platform. Lott was eventually bowled by Florence Pollock, but his aggressive innings had already tilted the contest firmly in Sonning's favour.

Murphy continued the assault, clubbing 22 from just 14 deliveries, including two fours and a six, before being caught by Thobey Culverwell off Jonathan Jensen's bowling with the score on 92. That brought Rayan Chib to the crease, and the number four produced the innings of the match. Chib was in devastating touch, smashing six fours and a six in a magnificent 42 from 25 balls before retiring not out. His partnerships proved crucial — 35 with Murphy for the third wicket and 34 with Ollie Terry for the fifth — as the Scorchers accelerated through the middle overs, reaching 50 in just 36 balls and 150 in 83.

Useful contributions from Neil Jasti (7 off 5), Terry (9 off 11) and Jack Durrant, who finished unbeaten on 13 from 12 balls, ensured the scoreboard kept ticking. The total was boosted significantly by 46 extras, including 25 wides and 17 byes, as the Hendred attack struggled with discipline. Jonathan Jensen was their most effective bowler, claiming 2 for 15 from his 10 balls, while George Brook's tidy spell of 1 for 6 from 15 balls was the standout economy performance. Pollock picked up the wicket of Lott but proved more expensive, finishing with 1 for 29.

The Hendred reply never got going. Arthur Parkes struck with the very first ball of the innings, having George Brook caught by Sidhu for a duck, and Durrant followed up swiftly by dismissing George Morrissey, caught by Jasti, to leave the visitors reeling at 0 for 1 and then 8 for 2.

Charlie Binning offered the sole resistance for East & West Hendred, counter-attacking with two fours and a six in a defiant 17 from 11 balls. Murphy eventually broke through, bowling Binning to end the only meaningful partnership of the innings. From 24 for 3, the collapse was dramatic — Durrant bowled Lucas Hood, and Parkes had Freddie Cartwright caught by Terry to leave the visitors at 25 for 5.

The match then witnessed a remarkable spell from Christopher Dowse, who ripped through the lower order to claim a hat-trick. Bowling with accuracy and menace, Dowse finished with extraordinary figures of 3 for 0 from his 5 balls, dismissing Thobey Culverwell (stumped by Harrison Lott), Jensen (also stumped by Lott) and Ellie Thresh (caught by Henry Robson) in successive deliveries. His three wickets came at a cost of precisely nothing — a devastating intervention that left East & West Hendred in ruins at 30 for 8.

Henry Johnson chipped in with the wicket of Charlie Cox, bowled for 4, and Robson wrapped up proceedings by bowling Olivia Thresh for a duck, as the visitors were dismissed for 35. The Sonning bowling attack shared the wickets superbly — Parkes (2 for 4), Durrant (2 for 7), Dowse (3 for 0), Johnson (1 for 3), Murphy (1 for 16) and Robson (1 for 1) all contributed — capping a thoroughly dominant performance from the Scorchers on home soil.
