Match Report

Sabres Chase Down Pinkneys Green to Claim Comfortable Victory at Knowl Hill

Sonning U11 Sabres secured a well-deserved win against Pinkneys Green in the BYCL Under 11 T16 Pairs North East league fixture at Knowl Hill CC on 16th June 2024. Captain Anay Patel won the toss and opted to field first, a decision that proved astute as the Sabres bowlers kept the visitors in check before the batting line-up chased down the target with 16 runs to spare.

Pinkneys Green, batting first, posted 106 for 5 from their 20 overs, with extras accounting for a significant 53 of their total — 39 from wides and 14 from no-balls. Tom Slater was the visitors' most fluent contributor with the bat, striking 12 off 12 balls including a boundary, while Tom Shaw added 9 from 13 deliveries. Alex Konrad chipped in with 8 and Kobe Khan made 7, but no Pinkneys Green batter was able to build a truly commanding innings.

The Sabres' bowling attack shared the workload effectively across ten bowlers. Aarib Ansari was the pick of the bunch, returning figures of 2-0-6-1 — the most economical spell of the innings. Finley Andrews was similarly impressive, conceding just 10 runs from his two overs while claiming a wicket, and notably the only Sonning bowler to send down his allocation without a single wide or no-ball. Captain Anay Patel and Divik Gupta each took a wicket apiece, ensuring the visitors were pegged back at regular intervals.

In reply, the Sabres reached 122 for 8 from their 20 overs, boosted considerably by 65 extras from the Pinkneys Green bowling attack — 53 wides and 12 no-balls providing a steady stream of runs without a bat needing to be raised. It was a generous offering from the visitors' bowlers that ultimately proved decisive in the outcome.

Aarib Ansari backed up his fine bowling display with a team-high 12 runs from 12 balls at the top of the order, providing early momentum. Diyaan Monga matched that contribution, also scoring 12 off 13 deliveries batting at number eight, ensuring the chase stayed on track through the middle and later overs. Anay Goswani contributed a useful 7 from 14 balls and Arjun Chirunamala added 6, as the lower order kept the scoreboard ticking over.

Pinkneys Green's bowlers did manage to take eight wickets, with Alex Konrad the most disciplined, returning 2-0-6-1 without conceding a single wide or no-ball. Captain Alex Crowder bowled tightly as well with figures of 2-0-5-1, and Jamie Pitcock and Kobe Khan each claimed a wicket. However, the sheer volume of extras meant the opposition could never build sustained pressure.

The result sees the Sabres collect 20 league points, with Aarib Ansari's all-round contribution of 12 runs and 1 for 6 standing out as the performance of the match. It was a disciplined team effort from Sonning, with every player contributing across both innings in a format that rewards collective endeavour.
