Sonning Women Fall Short as Wargrave Claim Victory at King George's Field

Sonning Women's 1st XI suffered defeat at home to Wargrave in the Super 8 Development Group 1 on 12th May, falling 27 runs short in their pursuit of 100 at King George's Field. Captain Sharon Fleming won the toss and opted to field first, but her side were unable to contain the Wargrave batting order before struggling to build consistent partnerships with the bat.

Wargrave's innings was built around contributions from across the order, with Georgia Harsham top-scoring with 17 off 16 balls and Allison Holloway providing a brisk 14 from just nine deliveries towards the end of the innings. Opener Srisha Ganagabalana set the tone with 13 off 14 balls, while captain Freya Cook (7) and Kaelin Dell (6) kept the scoreboard ticking through the middle overs. Extras played a significant role, with 27 added to Wargrave's total — 15 wides and 12 no-balls proving costly for the home side.

Sonning's bowling attack found wickets hard to come by. Amberley Taylor was the most economical bowler on display, returning outstanding figures of 1-1 from her single over. Fleming chipped in with 2-15 from her two overs, providing the only other breakthroughs, but her six wides took some of the gloss off the performance. Grace Phillips proved expensive, conceding 30 runs from three overs including six no-balls, while Katie Barrows also struggled with her extras, sending down three wides and four no-balls in her two-over spell. Rebecca Malhi was tidy with just seven runs from two overs, though four wides crept in.

Wargrave posted 99 for 4 from their 16 overs, setting Sonning a target of 100 to win. The chase began promisingly through opener Rita Green, who struck a positive 15 off 11 balls to give the home side early momentum. However, Rebecca Malhi was unable to score from her 13 deliveries at the other end, and the required rate began to climb.

Chloe Bailey contributed seven off nine balls batting at three, but the middle order found run-scoring difficult against disciplined Wargrave bowling. Ashleigh Fido was particularly impressive, bowling four overs for just nine runs including a maiden, effectively applying the brakes on Sonning's chase. Fleming made eight off 12 balls and Sophie Parker showed resolve at the end of the innings with 11 from 14 deliveries, but it was not enough to bridge the gap.

Wargrave captain Freya Cook took 1-24 from her four overs, though her eight wides kept Sonning in the contest, while Laanya Rupasinha claimed 1-18 from her full allocation. Srisha Ganagabalana was steady with 0-11 from four overs, and the collective discipline of the Wargrave attack ensured Sonning could only muster 72 for 2 from their 16 overs.

The 27-run defeat leaves Sonning with work to do in the league, with the excess of extras in the field — 27 in total — proving to be the decisive factor on the day. Tighter bowling discipline will be essential if Fleming's side are to turn their fortunes around in the coming fixtures.
