U15 Sharks Fall Short as Extras-Laden Contest Sees Henley Claim Victory at The Brakspear Ground

Sonning U15 Sharks travelled to The Brakspear Ground on 31 August for a BYCL Under 15 T20 Challenge fixture against Henley and, despite winning the toss and choosing to field first, were unable to contain the hosts, who posted 181 for 2 from their 20 overs before restricting the Sharks to 108 for 8 in reply.

The match was defined in large part by extras, with a combined 105 runs conceded in wides and no-balls across both innings. Sonning's bowlers shipped 61 extras during the Henley innings — 41 of them wides — which supplemented a strong batting performance from the home side. Edward Jones endured a particularly difficult spell, conceding 16 runs from a single over that included 13 wides and two no-balls, while Veer Krishna's two overs also proved costly with 10 wides.

Henley's innings was built on a formidable opening partnership of 102 between George Piercy and captain Joshua Ellison, with Raiph Surplice joining the fray at number two. Piercy struck an aggressive 31 from just 18 balls, cracking four fours and a six before retiring, while Ellison contributed a brisk 18 off 18 deliveries. Surplice added 23 from 35 balls before being stumped by Sambuddha Bhattacharjee off the bowling of captain Neel Kumar. Later in the innings, Aakansh Naik provided further impetus with a rapid 32 from 19 balls, retiring not out as the home side powered to a commanding total.

Tom Wolfenden was the pick of the Sonning attack, returning figures of 1 for 22 from his three overs when he bowled Ellison to break the century stand. Kumar also claimed a wicket, finishing with 1 for 18 from two overs, but the remaining seven bowlers used by the Sharks went wicketless.

In reply, Sonning's run chase got off to a shaky start. Opener Sambuddha Bhattacharjee fell for 2, stumped by Piercy off Shreyas Gandhi, before Edward Jones provided a brief spark with 12 from eight balls, including two fours, only to be bowled by Gandhi in the same spell. At 20 for 2, the Sharks were already behind the required rate.

Timothy Jenner proved to be the backbone of the Sonning innings with a battling 26 from 48 balls. He put on 38 for the third wicket with Shreyas Koppole, who made 7 before being run out by Aakansh Naik, and then added a crucial 41 for the fifth wicket alongside Kumar, who contributed a patient 11 from 23 deliveries. That partnership briefly kept Sonning's hopes alive, taking the score from 59 to 100, but both batsmen departed in quick succession — Kumar run out and Jenner following moments later at the same total — and the chase effectively ended there.

Run-outs proved Sonning's undoing, with five of their eight dismissals coming via that route, pointing to difficulties in communication between the wickets. Henry Johnson was run out without facing a ball immediately after Koppole's departure, and Veer Krishna suffered a similar fate late on. Gandhi's figures of 2 for 12 from three overs were the standout bowling performance for Henley, while captain Ellison contributed with both bat and in the field, running out two Sonning batsmen and taking 1 for 5 with the ball.

Henley ultimately ran out comfortable winners, with the 73-run margin reflecting the dominance they established in the first innings. While Jenner's resistance and the Sharks' ability to pick up five bonus points offered some positives, the volume of extras conceded with the ball and the frequency of run-outs with the bat will be areas for the team to address.
