Match Report
Sonning's Division 1B Fixture at Stoke Green Abandoned After Rain Disrupts Promising Bowling Display
Sonning 1st XI's trip to Stoke Green CC on 6th June ended in frustration as their Division 1B encounter was abandoned, with both sides collecting seven points apiece. Captain Peter Higginbottom won the toss and inserted the hosts, but the weather ultimately had the final say, denying Sonning the chance to chase what was shaping up to be a modest target.
Having elected to field first on what appeared a bowler-friendly surface, Sonning made an encouraging start through Mohammed Zahid, who proved the pick of the attack. Zahid struck twice in a disciplined seven-over spell, returning figures of 2-13 from his allocation, including a maiden. He accounted for both Stoke Green wickets to fall, clean bowling captain Kashif Abbasi for 9 and later removing the experienced Zaheer Sher for 13.
At the other end, Damario Goodman was equally miserly, conceding just 13 runs from six overs with three maidens, though he was unable to find a breakthrough. Goodman's tight lines complemented Zahid's wicket-taking ability and kept the pressure firmly on the Stoke Green batting order throughout the opening exchanges.
Discipline with the ball, however, was not universal across the Sonning attack. Extras contributed a significant 26 runs to the Stoke Green total, with 20 wides proving particularly costly. Danyal Ghazi conceded seven wides in his five overs, while Higginbottom's brief two-over spell included six wides alongside eight runs. Ghulam Abbas went for 18 from four overs, also sending down two no-balls, and the loose deliveries allowed the hosts to keep the scoreboard ticking without needing to take undue risks.
Fahad Raja anchored the Stoke Green innings with an unbeaten 30 from 79 deliveries, an innings built on patience rather than aggression, finding just three boundaries during his stay. Raja was involved in both significant partnerships, putting on 25 for the first wicket with Abbasi before adding 45 for the second with Sher. His willingness to occupy the crease gave the home side a platform, though the scoring rate of just over three runs per over reflected how well Sonning had bowled as a unit.
When play was halted, Stoke Green had reached 79 for 2 from 24 overs, with Raja joined by Kavijot Singh, who had faced just five balls for his one run. With 26 overs still remaining in the innings and eight wickets in hand, the match was delicately poised, making the abandonment all the more disappointing for both sides.
For Sonning, the shared points will feel like an opportunity lost. Zahid's two early wickets and Goodman's relentless accuracy had given them the upper hand, and the hosts' cautious approach suggested the bowling attack was firmly on top. The challenge of controlling extras remains an area for Higginbottom's side to address, but the core of their bowling effort deserved better than a washout.
