Sonning 3rd XI Fall Short as Vasa's Valiant 65 Goes in Vain at Fox Lane
Sonning 3rd XI travelled to Fox Lane to face Eversley in a Division 7A league fixture and, despite a superb rearguard effort from Akash Vasa, were unable to chase down a formidable target of 275, finishing on 203 for 9 from their 45 overs.
Eversley captain Vijay Nawale won the toss and chose to bat on what proved to be a good surface. Openers James Heywood and Lucas Neville gave the home side a solid start, putting on 32 for the first wicket before skipper Sam Taylor struck twice to remove both men for 17 apiece. Taylor was the pick of the Sonning attack, returning excellent figures of 2-28 from his nine overs, including three maidens — a disciplined spell that briefly kept the hosts in check.
Kumaran Chandrababu then combined with Julian Cummings in a pivotal third-wicket stand worth 60 runs. Chandrababu struck four boundaries and a six in his 34 before Aahaan Sharma bowled him to leave Eversley 113 for 3. Cummings, however, was unmovable. The number four batsman anchored the innings superbly, compiling an unbeaten 84 from 88 balls, lacing 12 fours along the way. He shared productive partnerships with Nawale (57 for the fourth wicket) and later found support from Eyan Sen, who blasted an unbeaten 31 from just 22 deliveries. Sharma and Akash Vasa each claimed two wickets, but 45 extras — including 21 wides — proved costly as Eversley posted an imposing 274 for 6.
The Sonning reply got off to the worst possible start. Elliot Dawes fell for 13, caught behind off Eyan Sen, and Shreyas Koppole followed immediately for 2, both wickets falling at 17, leaving the visitors in deep trouble at 17 for 2. Elay Sen was the chief destroyer with the ball, claiming four wickets in a miserly nine-over spell that yielded just 31 runs.
Paul Towner and Kyle Dellar-Law steadied the ship with the innings' first significant partnership, adding 70 for the third wicket. Towner contributed a handy 24 before being bowled by Elay Sen, and Dellar-Law looked in fine touch, striking four fours and two sixes in his 47. His dismissal, also bowled by Elay Sen, triggered a collapse that saw Sonning slide from 87 for 3 to 106 for 7, with Karthikeya Reddy, Ollie Terry and Aahaan Sharma all departing cheaply.
At 106 for 7, the match appeared well beyond Sonning's reach, but Vasa had other ideas. Batting at number seven, he played with tremendous fluency and aggression, cracking ten fours in his 65 from 65 balls. His ninth-wicket partnership of 65 with Shahbaz Ali breathed life back into the chase and ensured Sonning picked up valuable bonus points. Ali finished unbeaten on 25 from 34 balls, while Arun Raghavendra added a brisk 6 not out from four deliveries at the death.
Ultimately, though, the early damage inflicted by Elay Sen's four-wicket haul and the consistent pressure applied by Colin Webb (2-38 from nine overs) and Sabya Sen (1-29 from nine) meant the required rate climbed beyond reach. Sonning finished 71 runs short, with Eversley claiming a deserved victory and the full 22 league points.
