U11 Sharks Fall Just Short in Narrow Defeat to Emmbrook & Bearwood

Sonning U11 Sharks suffered a ten-run defeat at Reading Blue Coat School as Emmbrook & Bearwood's Under 11 Kingfishers chased down their target in this BYCL Under 11 Challenge (Tier 1) North West fixture on 26 July 2026. After being asked to bat first following the visitors' decision to field at the toss, the Sharks posted 144 for 8 from their 20 overs, but the Kingfishers responded with 154 for 9 to claim the victory.

Oliver Baker was the standout performer with the bat for Sonning, striking a fluent 20 from just 14 deliveries, including four boundaries. Baker's aggressive approach at the top of the order gave the Sharks early momentum and set the tone for the innings. Captain Jasper Hawkins contributed a steady 12 from 23 balls, while Elijah Mani and Araiz Younis each added valuable knocks of 10, both finding the boundary rope twice during their stays at the crease.

Tanav Shanmugam chipped in with a useful 8 from 12 balls, including a four, and Jessica Hawkins added 6 from 18 deliveries. The Sharks' total, however, was significantly bolstered by 68 extras — 42 of which came from wides — as the Emmbrook & Bearwood bowling attack struggled with their discipline. Reyansh Ranwadkar was the pick of the visiting bowlers, delivering an excellent spell of 3-1-7-2 that included a maiden over, while Jamie Sank also claimed two wickets, though at the more expensive cost of 24 runs from his three overs.

In reply, Emmbrook & Bearwood were led superbly by their captain Reyaan Gupta, who top-scored with 30 from 21 balls to anchor the chase. Gupta's innings proved to be the decisive contribution, providing the foundation around which the rest of the batting order could rotate. Reyansh Ranwadkar continued his fine all-round display with 12 from 11 balls at the top of the order, while Jamie Sank (10), Yohaan Naik (10), and Abeer Arora (10) all made useful contributions to keep the scoreboard ticking over.

The Sharks' bowling effort was spirited, with the team claiming nine wickets across the innings. Elijah Mani was the most effective bowler for Sonning, returning figures of 2 for 15 from his three overs in an economical display that kept pressure on the visiting batters. Captain Jasper Hawkins matched Mani's wicket haul, taking 2 for 17 from three overs, while Jessica Hawkins also got in on the act with 1 for 17 from her two-over spell.

Sonning's challenge was undermined by the volume of extras conceded during the second innings, with 62 runs coming in extras — 48 of those from wides. Eshaal Ahmed's two overs proved particularly costly, conceding 10 wides among 20 runs, while Tanav Shanmugam sent down nine wides in his two overs. The Sharks simply gifted too many runs, and despite taking regular wickets, they were unable to stem the flow of extras sufficiently to defend their total.

The match ultimately hinged on the fine margins between the two sides. Both teams scored heavily from extras — Sonning benefitting from 68 in their innings and Emmbrook & Bearwood accumulating 62 in theirs — but Gupta's commanding knock of 30 proved to be the difference. It was a match in which the Sharks showed plenty of promise with both bat and ball, with Baker's batting and Mani's bowling particular highlights, but the inability to keep extras in check during the bowling innings ultimately cost them the contest.
