Match Report

Kestrels Fall Short as Cadle-White's Explosive Innings Seals Victory for Maidenhead & Bray

Sonning U9 Kestrels suffered a narrow defeat at King George's Field on Wednesday evening as Maidenhead & Bray U9 Harts chased down their target in just 16 overs of a BYCL Under 9 Super 8s North East fixture. After winning the toss and electing to bat, captain Veer Srivastava's side posted 115 from their 20 overs, but it proved insufficient against a visitors' batting line-up spearheaded by an outstanding knock from Bodie Cadle-White.

The Kestrels' innings began steadily with Ibrahim Jafri striking seven runs from eight balls at the top of the order, including a crisp boundary. Ziko Ghosh Nag contributed five from his 16 deliveries at number two, but the middle order struggled to build momentum. Alfred Connolly and Leopold Ellis both went scoreless, facing 10 and 14 balls respectively, as the Kestrels found run-scoring difficult against the opposition's more disciplined bowlers. Raees Khalir was particularly effective, returning figures of 2-8 from his two overs including a maiden, while captain Haaris Mehmood claimed 2-20 from three overs to keep the home side in check.

The Kestrels' innings was rescued by a superb late surge. Ranveer Hunjan played an aggressive hand, smashing 10 runs from just nine balls with two fours, while Zachary Knight and Viaan Mundeja-Gupta both chipped in with six apiece. The real fireworks came from Aadvik Gonchikar, who top-scored with a brilliant 19 off 13 deliveries, peppering the boundary with four fours. Srivastava added 11 from 11 balls with two boundaries of his own, ensuring the total reached a competitive figure. Extras played a significant role, with 46 additional runs — including 20 wides and 22 no-balls — boosting the Kestrels' total.

In reply, Maidenhead & Bray's chase was dominated by the outstanding Cadle-White, who blazed 37 from just 20 balls in a devastating display of hitting. His innings featured four boundaries and three towering sixes, immediately putting the Kestrels' bowling attack under severe pressure. Arihant Kachroo provided excellent support with 20 from 18 balls, including two fours and a six, while captain Mehmood weighed in with 13 off 16 deliveries.

The Kestrels' bowlers battled gamely despite the onslaught. Veer Srivastava was the most economical of the regular bowlers, conceding just eight runs from his two overs while claiming a wicket. Ranveer Hunjan produced a standout spell, bowling a maiden over and taking a wicket without conceding a single run from his one over — a remarkable achievement at any level. Viaan Mundeja-Gupta also impressed with two tidy overs, taking 1-6.

Ziko Ghosh Nag and Aadvik Gonchikar each claimed a wicket apiece, but both proved expensive, conceding 24 and 25 runs respectively from their two-over spells. With five wickets falling in the Maidenhead & Bray innings, the Kestrels created enough chances to apply pressure, but the visitors' top order had already done the bulk of the damage. The away side completed their chase in 16 overs, finishing on 109 for 5 with notably fewer extras than the Kestrels had conceded — just 22 compared to the 46 gifted in the first innings.

The six-run defeat will be a source of frustration for the young Kestrels side, who might reflect on those quiet middle-order overs as the difference between the two teams. Gonchikar's explosive batting and Hunjan's dual contributions with bat and ball were clear positives, while the lower extras conceded by Maidenhead & Bray's bowlers in the second innings ultimately proved a decisive factor in a competitive contest.
