Sabres Struggle With the Bat as Finchampstead Claim Comfortable Victory

Sonning U11 Sabres travelled to Finchampstead Leas on 10 August for a U11 T16 Pairs league fixture and, despite winning the toss and electing to field first, were unable to contain the hosts before finding run-scoring desperately difficult in reply. Finchampstead posted 106 from their 20 overs and Sonning could muster only 53, handing the home side a deserved win.

Captain Charlie Bright's decision to bowl first appeared a reasonable one, but Finchampstead's batters proved difficult to dislodge in the early overs. Opener Aanya Adhikari struck two confident boundaries on her way to 11 from just 12 balls, setting the tone for the home innings. It was Sahasra Gupta, however, who proved the standout performer with the bat, cracking five fours in an impressive knock of 20 off 17 deliveries — comfortably the highest individual score of the match.

The Sabres' bowling attack was undermined by a costly extras tally. A total of 46 extras — including 23 wides and 14 no-balls — supplemented Finchampstead's scoring significantly. Elijah Patel's two overs proved particularly expensive, conceding 19 runs with seven wides and four no-balls, while Owen Simmons' spell yielded 15 runs from his two overs with five wides and six no-balls.

There were, however, bright spots with the ball for Sonning. Suvir Jaryal produced an outstanding spell of 2-0-6-4, claiming four wickets while conceding just six runs without a single wide or no-ball — a display of admirable control for the age group. Henry Bright was equally economical, returning figures of 2-0-2-1, while Charlie Bright chipped in with two wickets of his own. Muhammad Shah also picked up a wicket, finishing with 2-0-8-1.

The chase of 107 never gained any momentum. Finchampstead's bowlers were disciplined throughout, with Sahasra Gupta following up her batting exploits with superb figures of 2-1-2-2, including a maiden over. Anvi Paliwal was similarly miserly, conceding just three runs from her three overs with a maiden to her name. The home attack collectively bowled with far greater accuracy than their visitors, conceding only 20 extras across the innings.

Sonning's batters struggled to find the boundary, with Elijah Patel's solitary four the only one managed across the entire innings. Henry Bright top-scored with a patient 8 from 17 balls, while Oliver Barker contributed 7 from 11 deliveries. Jamie Dollinger added 5 from 13 balls lower down the order, but with 10 wickets falling — including two apiece for Muhammad Shah, Suvir Jaryal and Oliver Barker — the run deductions in the pairs format compounded Sonning's difficulties.

The Sabres will take heart from Jaryal's exceptional bowling performance and the battling contributions of Henry Bright and Oliver Barker, but the disparity in extras conceded — 46 in the first innings compared to 20 in the second — ultimately told the story of a match in which discipline with the ball proved decisive.
